my truck is all over the road.. ???

i have an 04 chevy crew cab 4x4 duramax.. about 75k on it.. lately it has felt like it wants to wander all over the road, especially at highway speeds. i was t old its probly the idler arm, then my buddy tells me its probly the steering stabilizer.. any input???

My vote is for the stabilizer. Happened to me before. If it is your sway bar than you should be able to look under the front of the truck and just look at it. Make sure the sway bar linkage is also connected.

Jack the front end up with the tires off the ground , grab the tire and ck for play up and down , side to side , have someone else watch all the ball joints tie rod ends, steering linkage for any thing loose . You'll need to do one side at a time under the lower control arm to take the pressure off the ball joints .

sway bar linkage is what I'm thinkin. Had two go out in 25k on my dmax. I think its mostly because I've got my t-bars cranked all the way and going down rough roads.

Turbo Tim advice is right on, all the wear in your front end will show up right away. One tire in the air will also do the trick

Mine started swaying it was the big nut holding the pitman arm on came loose couldnt see it but when I put a wrench on it, it moved.

pitman arm, idler arm and drag link, all under the skid plate and never get greased, also check upper and lower ball joints, jack up front end and have someone hold one tire and move the other, find out were the slack is

as hilinrider said, idler and pitman arm............ if it is lifted they make a kit that stabilizes the pitman and idler so it does not ware out nearly as fast...... also as said before lift the front end up with a jack and shake the front end down...... If you stick the truck in 4x4 and punch it and it pulls extremely hard to one side it is probably the idler and pitman, but the tie rods end may also be bad. Hope this helps I see these every day. Let me know if you need any more help.... p.s. the steering stabilizer only dampens the hits that the tie rods, idler and pitman arm takes, to prevent ware, you should not be able to feel a bad stabilizer unless its bent.......

X2 --also ck the steering shaft its self--gm has a big problem with the slide joint getting loose--usually you can here the slight clunk when you turn and go over some uneven groung--you can also feel it by turning the wheel veeery slightly back and forth---

ive had to replace both my front wheel hubs due to bearing failure. the front wheel was so loose it looked like it was going to fall off

Lots of help posted already but I would say ask around about a good repair shop that would do a FREE inspection, Not a shop that tells you what you need but also shows you what you need & why you need it. Many have touched on what could be tha cause but let a trained tech show you so you know. Whats crazy is how many of these newer trucks are coming in needing repairs but the owner is still stroking a $700.00 payment & cant pay for the repairs.... They just throw it on the credit card.

The GM IFS system has alot of weak links to it and they wear down quickly, more so if running lifted and oversize rubber. My 03' 2500hd was pooched by 30k mi. and although warranty would have rebuilt it,I opted for components from cognito motorsports and have never had a problem since.I highly recommend their product. I see they have a dealer in Leesburg near you(precision offroad &truck accessories).might be worth a look if you plan to keep the truck awhile for the investment.
