my hero died

so yesterday night I stumbled upon a news article in yahoo sports that Jeremy Lusk the mx freestyle rider died Monday after suffering massive head trauma after crashing in competition. He was only 24. He was doing a back flip seat grab and after seeing the video of him crash, it was quite obvious how bad it really was.He was an awesome rider, lots of talent, and was pushing the envelope, he was the first rider to do a double grab back flip. he rode with more energy than any other I've seen in a long time, he rode for the metal mulisha.

He will be greatly missed by all that have seen him ride. With great sorrow we freestyle riders say farewell to a fellow ride. I just want to extend hopes and prayers to his wife, family, and mulisha family.

I saw it once. That was enough.

The one I saw in slow motion pretty much spoke too loud to me.
From the 90 degree back bend to the image pasted in my mind of his face nearly totally exposed below the chinbar of his helmet as it tried to come off rearward before he hit the dirt the final time. Almost like something went wrong with the strap or it wasn't tight. Then he laid there and quivered slowly for a bit.

Over 40 years of racing I have seen a lot of limp bodies as they were knocked out in crahses. Sad to say that when that quiver is apparent, it's over.

He had me at the edge of my seat during finishing laps of a lot of races viewed in the past.

Like noted in my signature.... HE IS A HERO !!

what really cheezes me off is that not a single news station that I know of said a word about it. If it would have been some over paid football player or basketball player that spraind his pinky than it would be all over the place, and he would get paid for not "doing his job". These freestyle rides put their lives on the line every time they ride, and its for our amusment. If they get hurt they doen't get paid to sit on the bench.

First off let me say that it is sad that this kid died doing what he loved to do and was very good at.
With that said would someone please explain Hero to me?
To me a Hero would be someone who would give his or her life for his country, or fellow man. Like Soldiers at war in far off countries, or the men and women who gave their lives trying to help people out of the World Trade Center.
I think a lot of people, (especially young people) are confused as to the differance as to what makes a Hero, and what is simply an Idol.

Hero -
Refers to Characters (fictional or historical) that, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice
