My engine blew up... any suggestions

So I bought an 01' RMK 800 last month, the guy i bought it from said it had a new motor, crank and clutch with about 500 miles on it. On my 4th ride, just cruising along, the motor cut out and grinded to a halt. I took it into the dealer and they said my crank, one piston, and a cylinder were toast. They said it would be $2250 to fix. I paid $2700 for the whole sled. I am a skier just using the sled to access BC. I don't have a ton of money. I am trying to decide whether to try to sell the sled with blown motor and cut my losses or to try and fix the thing. I called the guy I bought it from, he told me where he got the motor put in, but he had no records from it. I emailed that place trying to find out if they have any record of it, and maybe some sort of warranty. I haven't heard back from them yet.

Any suggestions would help me out.

Thanks All!

Youve suffered the wrath of a cranky 800 Poo. Sorry to hear of your loss. Work on getting some type of help from the shop that rebuilt the motor, but chances are your SOL.

yeah, I've got a sug. for ya- if you are just sledding to GET to ski areas, why not buy an older RX-1, just for the dependability factor? Sure, it is a bit heavier, but they get around pretty good stock. For about $3000, you can pick them up, and someone would buy your 800 Poo as-is. Put her in the swapmeet and see what happens. that's my $.02- now my change:p

Sorry man, that sucks...
Depends if you're mechanically inclined or not. If you don't feel comfortable doing the job yourself, I'd sell it as is and cut your losses.

That really sucks, but one thing about buying anything used, don't believe a single word out of the persons mouth. Some people are good and legit, others will tell you anything. Always get paperwork for ANY work they claimed was done. If you don't know enough to look over it yourself, get a shop to look at it, it's well worth it. It depends how long you plan to keep the sled, if you get a motor put in, you should have a solid sled for a long time, pricy but a good sled, or you could sell it and then have to find another good sled that won't leave you in the same boat in a few months again....

Just curious, were you towing skiers when the motor died?

If you don't need/ want a mountain sled to get to where you ski or to play on, sell it and get a wide track. And if you don't have any previous sled experience, look for a 4 stroke.

I wasn't towing, just cruzing solo at like 70 mph. I do want a mountain sled so I can travel through deep powder. I do enjoy boondocking also.

Mark about your 800 motor.

You can send just the bottom-end or the whole motor. If you send the whole motor its best to take it apart somewhat and put it into two boxes to keep the weight down so it doesn't get broke.

If you want it estimated just put a note in the box and explain what you are looking for.

Thanks, Dan

It has more to do with steepness of terrain than deep snow. A mountain sled works well if you have hill climbs to get to your terrain. Basically any spot where momentum is your friend is better for a mountain sled.

A WT or especially a SWT will break trail through deep powder (especially at slow speeds) better than a mountain sled. You lose the fun factor of ripping around though.
