my dog is limping..

a few weeks ago my dog developed a limp.. only happens when he first wakes up in the morning or after he takes a nap for a couple hours..

took him to the vet, they gave him pain medicine.. limp went away as long as he was on the pain medicine.. pain meds gone, limp is back..

its one of his front legs, thought it was the right but, now im not sure, could be the left.. either way, hes still limping..

hes 5.5 years old..

any ideas or suggestions?

How big is he? Our dog used to do that and we started giving her the extra Strength Osteo Bi-flex twice a day. She is a small dog so we cut them in half.

She doesn't limp anymore and she is 7 years old. It cannot hurt the dog, my vet actually recommended it.

Yep, he's addicted, happens to me all the time when Shel takes away my pain meds.................:eek::eek:

Glucosamine is yer answer..................if yer dog isn't prone to poppin pills there's some wonder stuff ya can put in his water that will work wonders.... just don't know the name of it off the top of my head

Labs are known for having bad joints. My neighbor has used a bone and joint pill (not sure what the brand is I can find out) His lab is now 15 they almost put her down because she couldn't move. They started giving her the joint pill and the dog walks like it's a pup now.

see if you can get the name of that shat... please.. :beer;

I don't think the glucosamine works. Half an aspirin/day seems to work wonders. I have had two labs develop limps, one young one old. The aspirin really helped the older dog. I was giving her both glucosimine and aspirin, dropped the glocosamine and she still was happy, dropped the aspirin and she was in pain again. The young one is more difficult. He was injured young, the limp comes and goes. Sometimes he re-aggrivates the injury, sometimes I think he just hams it up for attention. I didn't think surgery was a good answer for either of my dogs so I have just tried to take it easy on them and use common sense.

Beauty of a animal NT, 95 lbs is a lot of lab. surely not unheard of but still a biggn. Try dropping 5 -10 lbs off his frame. see what happens. and of course rest him. no ball throwing crap. I've seen more good body dogs ruind by the f' n tennis ball. The tennnis ball, stick what ever it is is way over rated. The dog goes from a cold muscle condition to 119%............ NOT good for a human not good for a dog. Arthitis is always a real (crapy) possibility. I had a lab that dislocted his Knee cap from time to time for the 1st 2 years of his life. Then it just quit. NO bs surgery, I would just flop him down on his side grap him by the foot pull his leg staight and grab his knee cap andd flip it back into place. don't let the vet cut him yet. give it some time. Vets are in business to make $$$

Good luck and take care of that bird dog!!:beer;

Half an aspirin/day seems to work wonders. .

wouldnt that just mask the pain? in other words, its not fixing the problem, its just covering the pain...

justadude, you sayin my dog is fat? ;)

i understand what you are saying about the exercise thing, i havent been playong fetch or anything with him.. his problem is, he is just high strung.. my yard is fenced in but, the living area of the house is on the second floor so, he has to go downstairs.. well, just about everytimg i open the door he goes apesh!t and runs down the stairs a hundred miles an hour, most the time skipping the last 4 steps..

I have had 2 tplo surgeries on my dog thats basically an acl ligament on the back legs that hold their knee in place.I sometimes give him a med called metacam thats a strong antimflamatory works good.Baby aspirin works to mask pain I dont like to use it.Hes pretty much healed now so I dont give anything try and keep weight down a bit.Noticed sometimes his front legs hurt but I think he hurts his feet digging for gophers something to do with his nails.Hes basically a wreck but we keep him around anyways.

I give my 9 year old, three legged beagle flexicose once a day with her food. It's a Glucosamine chondrotin with msm complex, works wonders for her! Give it a look Flexicose.com

I would check out his feet like you said, I have a similar sized retriever and he had a bone chip in one of the joints in one of his toes. His limp comes and goes, but the vet gave me some pills to give him and it goes away in a day usually.

Dogs

Hopefully your dog recovers, Glucosimine will work wonders for them.
We just put down our Great Dane yesterday. Cancer got the better of him, he was 10 and so much a part of our family. Pretty sad days in our house right now.

My Springer has hip displacia and he would wake up and howl in the morning. We gave him asprin as directed but that didn't do the trick and messed with his system so we switched to a steroid called Prednisolone. He acts like a puppy again. On the weight loss thing, my vet said he was not overweight but dropping a couple would help in his situation. Good looking dog NT.
