mtn cat 800 recoil/stator/flywheel problems???

i just recently bought a 2001 mountain cat 800 carbed sled. rode it for a day and on the second day the recoil snapped. so instead of taking an hour of my trail ride to take the recoil apart and fix it i just ran it by starting with the strap from the tool kit. anyways i was riding and every thing seemed fine. we got to our 3rd stop and after a few drinks we came out to leave for our next stop and i thought my motor was locked up. tore it down and ended up being mechanically fine. tore the recoil apart and there is nothing left of the recoil or the flywheel magnets. i was wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them? my stator doesnt look like it got hurt by this but what are the chances its ok?

You can get the stator checked by someone with an ohm meter. Your'e usually ok running with a broken rope but when the recoil breaks you have to pull the pieces out before you run it. Usually the nut comes off or the center stud breaks loose. Shame on you! They ususally break because someone gave a big tug before they got the pawls hooked.

well i'm not tryin to make an excuse but this happened on the second day i rode the snowmobile. anyways i guess i know now that i wont be riding with a broken rope just because of the chance of this happening again. i have a multimeter with an ohm setting. but in the shop manual i have it doesnt show you the resistance of the stator but the peak voltages. can i still check this with the multimeter or is there some special meter for this?

A good digital ohm meter will work but the manual show have the wires and reading for you. Do a search on here for Blaine. He has a link to his you tube vidio showing how to test a stator. It's a very good vidio, he rebuilds stator so it is a good link to keep track of.
