MT man kills charging grizzly w/ a SHOT GUN!

I prolly would have pooped myself.

Hunter shoots charging grizzly bear near Choteau

GREAT FALLS - The Teton County Sheriff's office says a pheasant hunter shot and killed a charging female grizzly bear about 10 miles northwest of Choteau.

Undersheriff Denny Blauer said the grizzly, which had three cubs, charged the man in heavy brush Monday afternoon after being surprised when the hunter came around a corner. The man said the bear was about 3 feet away when he shot it in the head with a .12-gauge shotgun.

Blauer said neither the bear nor the hunter was at fault because "the bear was trying to protect her cubs and the guy just reacted to a threat."

Becoming VERY common.

The Front Range bears are coming very far down and out onto the plains around there. Bears in Dupuyer, Shelby, Simms, Fort Benton, Conrad...I'd say they are doing well.

About like here.....too many Griz. They get captured here to be sent elsewhere in our state, as well as Idaho (and probably other states I don't know about......yet). The one year DNA study that showed we have the highest concentration of Griz in the lower 48 wasn't enough. They are now doing a 4 year DNA study. :face-icon-small-dis

The amount of cubs these bears have is a direct indicator of how well they are doing. It's very common now for them to have 2 -3 cubs, which means they are doing extremely well (better than when there were no people around and they had the run of the lands).

Unfortunately there are just going to be more and more run-ins with these bears with the huge amount of them out there.

I had a buddy that grew up in Choteau get a little close while pheasant hunting too. Three years ago now, he and his brother, one walked down into a thicket of cat-tails about 6 feet deep, couple minutes goes by, then a griz stands up straight out of the cat-tails about 10 feet away! They said that griz looked like it was a full four feet above the thicket, the brother in the thicket squeezed the gun so hard when it stood up that he squeezed the trigger and the gunshot scared it away......lucky bastage....

I can't believe that guy killed a freaking bear with birdshot though! I always carry a tactical 870 with me in the truck, I always load so the first shot is a bird-shot round, then stack slugs and 00 buck behind it, figured that a shot of birdshot to the face would raise hell with eyes and nose, but never figured it would KILL it! that's why the slugs and buckshot are following the birdshot.:)

Birdshot can blow a nice hole through steel if your close enough. Hate to think how close that bear got before he pulled the trigger. Probably close enough to have nightmares the rest of your life.

Glad they didn't prosecute the guy and take his guns/hunting rights away.

I still like my uncles idea about moving bears/wolves around...go tranqualize a sow and a cub and a heard of wolves, put them in a trailer and haul butt to new york, let them loose in Central Park...then see what all the enviromentalists/law makers have to say
