Just got up on Mt Adams last week & noticed something has changed....the wilderness boundry markers are way further down the hill that last winter. Anyone know anything about this?

I wonder if it was just a guess when they put them up? Btw, that is clearly on the south side but where do you ride from to get to where you are in that pic?

We were in that area last Sat. Talked to 2 guys that spoke with the Forest Service person that was putting up the signs. They thought the signs were lower also. We thought it was odd there was only one FS person out there. Is the lava bed to the north & west from where your picture was taken?

yup, the pic was taken from the top of the lava beds looking SW down the hill.
Rode from pineside parking lot, up thru the lava beds.

from the Government

This is the reply I got from the forest service...any thoughts?
Sounds like this whole thing is a bit random.
I need to look closely at a map

Thank you for you inquiry. The actual wilderness boundary has not changed--unfortunately, it had been inacurately posted in the past for winter recreation, and I'm not sure why. I was not aware of that until the issue came up this year. So, the boundary was posted this year on what was commonly thought to be the actual wildernessss boundary--the Round-the-Mountain Trail #9. But, after the posting was completed, we looked at the legal description as generally described in Public Laws *-577 and 98-339, and the boundary is actually identifed as being "200 feet southerly of and perpendicular to the centerline of USFS Trail No. 9." So what is now posted is also incorrect and next year, the markers will move again to reflect the legal boundary. We're sorry for any confusion this has caused, and will cause in the future. can you say .........g.p.s....??????

If I read the reply correctly are the signs going to move even farther south?

I can see on the map that the boundary runs along the 6500ft elevation line. But the signs were so low it was hard to navigate. I think we checked one sign and it was at 6000ft. Also mid January the signs were at the "usual" location. So they took the effort to move them mid season. Either way it feels like we are being squished off the mountain.
