Mountain Sled?? Or Not?

I see some riders saying the Ski-Doo 850 Summit is "NOT" a true mountain sled. Honestly what do you think makes a True Mountain sled? I know my 16 T-3 163 was a beast in 2-3' of fresh Pow and the 17 850 is an improvement over my 16.

Yeah, unfortunately, Doo has decided to make only trail sleds from here on out. The 850 Summit was optimized for high speed trail racing. The extra long track provides for increased trail traction and the T-motion, combined with the high center of gravity and narrow 36" ski stance allows the rider to really lean the sled over in the corners. Eventually, Poo and Cat will catch on...

Soooo...Is that the only reference to it "not being a true Mountain Sled" or is there something else? As a guy who owns Cats, I am used to everyone telling me how my last few chassis are all "snowcross" or "trail" sled designs and how much they suck compared to the "real" mountain specific machines!

All I can say is that I seem to be able to go where everyone else goes with my poorly thought out, copycat snocross machine, and quite often it is much higher than I am really comfortable with.

I guess in the end, i don't really care about all the lip as long as I still get that stupid grin and tingle of adrenaline each time I turn up the hill and punch the throttle. I will just stick some numbers on the side!!!:face-icon-small-hap

Wasn't the AXYS platform introduced with the Switchback a year before it was used as a mountain sled chasis?

I guess it's not a true mountain sled either.
I think that's pretty common for Polaris. They sell more trail sleds than they do mountain sleds. A lot more miles are accumulated on trails. R&D maybe?

I know very little about Ski-Doo's so that being said. Why is this a dumb topic? A person asks a question and gets ridiculed for it.

Because the #2 post is from the OP and he obviously knows a thing or two about mountain sleds. So, I believe he was being sarcastic.

Today's mountain sleds, from all 4 manufacturers, are drastically different from trail sleds. If this thread was stuck back in the 80s or 90s, it would have merit, but with today's sleds, it's just silly.

#1 trail sled with a 3" lug just in case there happens to be a couple feet of snow on top of the trail

Based on your picture it looks like you should start looking at the forecast before you go out!

Was actually mostly serious with the question, but in reality Loudhandle probably got under my skin a little more than he should have. Maybe I will buy a Poo Pro/Axys so I have atleast 1 Mountain sled. :face-icon-small-win

Everyone knows the new doo doo is the best. Heck . . .everyone has been virtual-riding them since they were introduced in the spring. hahaha

So although BRP seems to have done a good job with this chassis and motor, how many of you think that they could have made an even better sled if they started from scratch rather than from the XM chassis? I think the G4 is a progression but not a fantastic inspiration. I wish their goal was to to make it as light and skinny as an AXYS, then I would be on one. I've just been too spoiled with a 400ish pound sled.

Idk if it's a "true" mountain sled :face-icon-small-win but it sure is fun beating up on the 800 Axys RMK at 95% break in

Did you really beat up on the sled or the guy riding it??? Big difference!!! Point being... if anyone in a group of new sleds is getting whipped... it's a rider issue and not the sled. They're all too good nowadays! I think the skidoo rides like a hooker on crack but that's prob cuz I've been on polaris for years and I'm sure if I spent more then 10 minutes here and there on one I'd prob learn to like em'. Even though I don't know you I can almost guarantee there are guys that could spank you on a 15 year old sled! Does that mean the chassis is better???

I thought this was a whole new sled. Did they really base it off an xm chassis?
