mountain max gearing

Is thier a easy way to fing out the stock gearing on a 2000 yamaha mountain max ? Im asking this because i would like to get a little more top end out of the machine. Is it hard to change out the gearing ? Any insight would be great

Thanks
Todd

your owners manual may have in it. or your dealer could tell you what they came with. or just pull the cover and count the teeth on the top and bottom gears, divide the number of teeth on the small gear into the big gear and that will give you your gear ratio provided the drivers have not been changed. for example 20/40 would be 2.0

21/40

Not hard to change at all. Just make sure whatever change in gears that you make, find out if the stock chain will/will not work.

I run 20/40 with the stock chain.

The stockers are 40/21...
MPI has a good chart on their site for determining chain length and calculating ratios factoring in your drivers. You are going the opposite way most people have gone; I run a 41/18 with a 68 link chain in mine. Unless you are doing lots of hardpack/flatland riding...
