Mountain Max 700 Electrical Problems... Help!

I just acquired a 1997 mountain max 700 from a friend. It has not been run in at least a year (probably more). I emptied the fuel tank, cleaned the carbs, and put in a new set of spark plugs. The motor would not start still, so I check the compression and it was reading 140 in all 3 cylinders.

I checked the spark, there was a spark there on all 3 plugs, but a very weak one. Im not sure what direction I should go from here, could it be as simple as replacing new plug caps and wires? Or am I needing to look deeper into the electrical system? (stater or magneto?)

I am also not sure what plug this sled calls for? (I will feel really silly if that is all it is) I currently have 3 BR9ES plugs in it... A shot of ether into the cylinders got it to pop, but barely anything worth being excited about.

Im not sure what to do! Any help would be awesome! Thanks so much!

I have a couple f these sleds. one starts awesome after sitting for months, the other is a bear.....pretty sure it is the fuel pump that is being difficult.

here is what I do, fill the tank with known good fuel, fill the oil, leave the choke off, and stuff a propane weed burning torch into the airbox (unlit of course) give it a couple seconds to load the box and start pulling. it will start.

i pull all 3 plugs, squirt fuel into cylinders, put plugs back in and try to start. repeat until fuel pump gets gas to carbs. usually only about three times or so?

Compression sounds good.

BR9ES are the correct plugs for it. As for the weak spark, it's more than likely a bad plug cap. They're cheap. Swap it out and that should solve it.

Like others have said, dump a little gas down each plug hole. It should fire long enough to get your float bowls filled. If not, you've got other issues.

'97 MM700 had bad stators in them. It was a recall item. Inquire at local dealer about replacement.

thanks so much guys, i will definitely give the dealer a call and see if the stator has been replaced already. Also definitely going to toss new plug caps on! Hopefully I will post a success story within a few days!

Good catch. Forgot about that. The '97 stators I saw fail usually had issues when hot. Let it cool down and it would run again.

TRUE, weak stator weak spark. I have seen one that we drowned in a pond do same thing. We put stator in it and would run but not well under load. Put coils on fixed problem. Simple motor, got spark got fuel you will have fire. Pull plugs and spray cylinders with starting fluid. If it fires it will run till fluid is gone. You know its a fuel prob after that.

If your pilot jets are plugged it won't start either. A weak spark is still a spark, it should still start. It sounds like it's not getting gas. You said it popped off with a shot of ether. So that tells me it's a fuel problem, JMO...

With a friend's 99 Mountain Max, we ususally have to repeat the "remove plugs, prime with fuel drill" at least 3-4 times at the beginning of the season until it will run on it's own. The 01 Max takes less times. i have heard the fuel drains /siphons from the float bowls back to the tank. I have no idea if that is true, but would explain the start up problems. If we start them every week, no problem. Once a month or less is like starting all over again.

Another thing to check is the plug on the back of the key switch. Mine got all corroded and I had weird electrical problems. Unplug it and check for spark. It will run with it unplugged.

Like I said, just something else to check if you haven't found the problem yet.
