Mountain Horse Bearing Replacement

How long does it take to redo all the bearings properly on average? The reason I ask is it just took me over 6 hrs from start to finish on so one else's skid, I only charged him for 5 hrs and still think it took too long.

That's probably not far off. I think that's about how long its taking me each time. Guys will tell you its easy and only takes a couple of hours just as they say for doing the swap from summer to winter on your bike, yah right, LOL.

Ah, now I don't feel so bad. It took me 6 hours replacing mine (not installing new double bearing kit; only replacing stock 2014 bearing setup). I think I can shave a fair bit of time off of it the next time, but this first time was a bear. Biggest issue was no published instructions. Second was vast amounts of red loctite. All but one came off after much heat and 1/2" impact wrench, but for one of them, I finally had to put the entire drive shaft in a HUGE vice and heated the bolt head until the grease was dripping out of the bearing housing and grease was smoking! Scared the heck out of me so called Timbersled and they said just keep at it and wouldn't damage/warp the bearing housing. So went back out and even with them still hot, took another 15 of heating and hitting it with a 1/2" impact wrench every 4 or 5 minutes to finally get the bolt out. Has to be a better way. For my part, I admit the entire process would probably be much faster and easier if done in the summer than in a 30 - 40 degree shop, so next year, I'm going to make more of an effort to get the kit and all maintenance cared for sooner in the season.

Anyone using blue loctite successfully rather than red? No Timbersled documentation that I could find on torque specs (and never got replies to my calls or emails on the topic), but seems most recommend 70 ft/lbs of torque for the driveshaft and jackshaft bolts. If a person used the that torque and blue loctite, would that not suffice? I've never had properly torqued and cleaned bolts come apart with blue loctite and red is such a pain to work with. Thoughts?

In another thread (the one about the bolts coming loose), green loctite was recommended for the inner bearing race to shaft interface as well. Any official word on if that is needed (I did not because that came up in the thread after I had reassembled). Maybe that is only an issue if there is a lot of slip between the shaft and inner race.

I think I've found why these people are having bearing failures. Gary (Ausm7499) is riding with them! He has a habit for riding with a group and having a bearing go out. Happened to my bike when Gary came to ride with me. Had a hell of an interesting ride out 2 up on a KX w/ SX kit. Thank god some sleds came along halfway up the drainage! I had to leave my bike in the woods overnight and come back with a mended drive shaft with new bearings.

Pro Tip : Bring extra bearings and housings when you ride with Gary! :D

I hope double row bearings are the end of the failures. Haven't had a breakdown since yours Rush maybe the bad luck has worn off.
 
Or, is there a way to remove and replace the drivers if you don't have a press?

Most likely no. But if you're determined you might find a way. If I hadn't found a friend with a press, I was thinking about trying an idea that I think I read about on this forum. They said you could do it by taking the ball out of your receiver on the back of your truck and then use a bottle jack on the ground, pushing the axle up through the hole in the hitch. But I'm sure a press would be a lot easier.
