Montana Tech & Butte, MT

One of the schools my daughter is thinking about is Montana Tech (Officially Montana Tech of the University of Montana, I think) in Butte. Can anyone tell me about the school and Butte? I've been to lots of places in MT but I can't remember if I've been to Butte.

She's thinking about engineering and possibly playing women's golf...

It is one of the best engineering schools around and has a very high placement rate. I grew up in Butte and went to Tech but I did not get an engineering degree. All of my friends that did get engineering degrees have never had a problem finidng a job. If you have any questions, let me know and I will see if I can answer them.

BTW, if you have driven from bozeman to missoula or vice versa you have gone through butte unless you went the long way

Looking on the map, I've never been to Butte. Been to Kalispell (Big Mountain Ski Area), but came from ND so we took Hwy 2 across, and have been to Bozeman, Red Lodge, and down to Yellowstone. Thanks for the info, I'll let you know if I have any more questions.

Any other opinions??

Ummm...
How bout University of Utah? or weber state, or westminister, or SLCC, or UVU...

SLC is much better than butte! There is a reason they call it the Butt of MT!!!

im kind of wondering the same thing my self except butte or helena for beign a diesel mechanic.

i dont remember much of butte other than construction and the continental divide.

How the heck should I know? I'm just her dad, fer chrissakes!:p

I DO know she'd like to go to a smaller school and would LIKE to play glof.

- The Utes don't offer women's golf

- Not sure she's good enough to play at Weber State (got a year left to improve, though)

- Don't know anything about UVU or Westminster, maybe she'll have to check them out...

Tech is a GREAT school. Has a strong reputation for being VERY rigorous. They weed out the wannabees.

I don't know about a womens golf program at Tech, but I know there is one at the NAIA school in Billings, one at The University of MT in Missoula...and possibly one at MSU in Bozeman (otherwise known at BozoTech)

School has an excellent reputation and high placement rate.

That was one of the schools I looked very seriously at going to a few years back.

I was impressed that they actually had a recruiting (job placement) department that could give you real live actual statistics instead of just blibbering something that sounded good at you. This speaks highly of their undergrad program. IMO, when looking at schools, find out how many companies and which companies come there to recruit each year ... that's a better measure of how good a school is that the dippy-doo "college ratings" everyone raves about that are based on how much $$$ in research grants people from India get the school

On the down side ... or up side depending on your point of view ...

Your daughter will probably one of maybe eight females at the whole school :(

That's pretty well why I didn't go there :(

At Montana Tech (as of right now), she'd be possibly the best player on their team.

MT and MSU are doubtful (possible though, depending on her progress).

Montana St-Billings is D2, and there are NAIA programs at Carroll College, Montana St-Northern, MOntana Tech, Rocky Mtn College, Montana-Western, and U of Great Falls. She could most likely play at any of those, according to a website I've got.

She's looking at schools in FL (Florida Tech), U of Maryland, possibly Virginia Tech, and who knows where else. She's got some website (and a big book) that helps you sort through your parameters...

Check out Texas Tech ... I'm pretty sure they have women's golf down there.

There were also something like 154 companies that came and recruited at the FALL COE job fair there the semester I graduated ;) ... They had to turn some companies away because they didn't have a big enough venue for all of them, and this wasn't even the spring job fair

Competitive as hell to land the best jobs coming out of their engineering program, but it's been paying off well for me ... I've had a few offers latley I've been able to turn down from the headhunters who told me that was how they found my resume :)

Yeah, they have golf at TT -- probably a little too good, though.

I'm kinda hoping she picks Florida Tech, then I can go visit. Melbourne is pretty close to Orlando, Daytona, etc. She's visiting there next weekend with her mom...

butte is a mining town. Great place to drink. The lady of the mountain is looking over you all the time. I believe one of the largest strip mines in the world. Lots of irish, lots of history.

if you are looking for a bachelors or assoc. in diesel northern here in havre has the best diesel program in the west, companies actively recruit here yearround and the school actively places kids for summer and permanent jobs all over the us and some overseas, plus if you are here in the winter i can line you up with a trailer spot damm near every weekend to ride:beer;

I would have to agree. A good friend of mine got his diesel degree there, lots of summer internships, and one nice gig when he graduated 3 years ago.

the internships with fairbanks morse working on navy ships have gone really well along sulzer and wartsilla have also gotten to the point were there isn't enough students to fill the gaps,

last i new it was runnin around 8k a semester, for tuition and books, taking 12 credits, i'm sure its a little more but not that much more

I've been looking there, too! I have a couple of friends who went there last year, also talk the "Ski-Doo'in it"(sp?), he's going there next year, he might be able to help you out with the details.

*cough* South Dakota School of Mines and Technology *cough* One of the top engineering schools in the country, 2000 students, we had over 100 companies at both our spring and fall career fairs this last year, with more on a waiting list to get in. More opportunities than you can shake a stick at, and theres a womens golf team to boot. Lots of nice courses to play in the Black Hills.
