Mod XLT question - yes, I'm at it again

Hey guy,
Yes, yes, yes.. I know I'm at it again. Here is what I would like to do. I really want to take a 144" skid from a newer sled with better suspension and throw on a 144" track or maybe a 146" assault track. who knows my options are wide open. I need to know what skids (if any) will bolt up to my XLT with the same mounting locations and will perform the best. Also tracks? drives? pitch? all that jazz. I have found multiple skids from polaris sleds, one i would love to get under there is an assault skid and track. will it work and with what mods will I need to do. I have swapped others on newer sleds with ease but are the new skids compatible with the "seasoned oldies"?

well I can tell you that your not gonna find a newer skid that will line up in the exact same mounting holes as your xlt, doesnt matter what year it is. I have done numerous swaps of putting edge rmk skids into the wedge chassis with great success. it does take the right measurments and moving mounts/drop brackets etc. also, if you want to go to a 2" paddle your either going to drop drivers to a 8 tooth system or do a D&R to the chaincase... I also have done both those options. As for the assult skid and track, you would need to go with 2.86 drivers on your driveshaft, since all older polaris sleds are all 2.52 pitch.

All in all the mod is not that bad to do, but takes some time and the right measurements and all that. feel free to PM me and I can help ya out with any questiions you may have and I can also give ya measurments for the skid mounting locations for 136, 144, and 151 edge skids into these wedge sleds. good luck.

How did the sleds behave after a D&R? I did the 8 tooth route on my XLT back in the day and dropped the rear of the skid down. It was ok, but the spindle angle was too vertical so it didn't steer real well after the upgrade.

The sled should behave just fine after a drop and roll, all it does is "drop" your drivers and "roll" them back in the tunnel, what this does is allow for more clearance for bigger lugged tracks in the tunnel/next to the bulk head and front coolers. I don't believe you could ever go wrong in doing a D&R because it improves your approach angle, which allows your sled to get on top of the snow better for an over all better deep snow performance.

Exactly what I was thinking. I did a edge skid in my wedge and it was easy. Drop and Roll is definately worth it but a little time consuming.

Actually it behaved very good, I like the change and the clearance and the approach angle is much better. a lot less trenching. its a good mod to do but it is extensive and time consuming.

I live in Milwaukie, if your interested your more then welcome to come check out my XLT mod and get and idea how I did it.

Spencer- Did you do a D&R on yours? What skid and track are you running again? I like the stance yours has, I have seen some mod sleds that have way too much "rack" and they look like they will just submarine into the snow. I have a set of front coilovers from a newer sled that have more adjustment so that may help the stance. I think they are from a newer XCR. might try to mount them and adjust to see how they work out.

right now i'm just praying for snow.

Yea I did a D&R and I'm running a edge skid. Honestly I wouldn't get to crazy with your sled. I can't believe how cheap some of these newer mod sleds are selling for that are light years ahead of our sleds.

Really the only thing I ended up leaving stock was the Bulk head and tub. Everything else is either off a newer sled or modified. Most people think mine is a edge since I'm running a Wedge Edge Lexan hood from Mountain fit hoods. Best advice is to start shaving weight any where you can because those sleds are tanks. Mine is really light but I set it up more for the trail. Was going to buy my Pro this year but bought a enclosed instead so I'll have to wait another year for that. If you ever need a hand let me know and I can help you out.
