I had a lot of fun with this project. Veeery time consuming considering I'm overly anal about the quality of my work and sled lol
I picked these up from the Edmonton sled show from the Mod Rods booth for $120.
Started out by tracing what part of my stock running boards I wanted to cut out. It ended up working out to an approx. 7/8" lip on the side closest to the tunnel, and 3/4" lip on the outside. I used a small hand-held hacksaw I found laying around to make all my cuts. Yes... I did it all by hand!! Took about an hour each side. I wanted more control then using a power tool.
From there I took a file and filed down all my cut edges so smooth them out. I rounded all the little "tabs" that were still sticking out on the tunnel side on the cut-out so in case a boot or leg slipped under the running boards snowpants or laces or gloves wouldn't get snagged and rip. The filing took 45 min a side. I also bent down the 2 "pimples" that were left on each side with a vice grip so the new boards would lay flat. I also filed down any parts that would show or stuck out underneath the new boards. I stood on my seat and looked down to see where I needed to file for this part.
Then I marked out where I wanted my rivets to go (every 5") and drill-pressed them out to 3/16". I layed each board down into where I wanted them to sit, held them in place, and took a pencil and traced the outline of the cut on the bottom side of each running board. That way I could see where the best spots to drill the rivet holes on the running board would be.
After the holes were drilled, I then placed each board on it's proper side and drilled through the stock running board lips and would then rivet it right away. I didn't pre-drill all the holes in case the riveting caused slight shifting so they would no longer line up straight.
Drill, Rivet, Repeat. Did this 16 times for each side. I Could not be happier with the outcome!!!
As you can see, from looking at an angle, you can see the tabs under the new running boards. But from the last picture, when looking from above, you cannot.
I hope this helps anyone else who was looking at doing this mod to their sleds!!! I can't wait to try it out this weekend
