Mixing octanes

I need to run some race fuel in my sled and was just wondering if I mix 55 gallons at a time will the two fuels (88 clear and 110 race) seperate over time. I would rather mix more at a time and have a more consistent blend every tank instead of just adding what I think I need for a ratio depending on what's left over in my tank.

Thanks in advance ;)

not really sure what your question is. You can use an online octane calculator to figure out what blend to use. Fresh race fuel will stay good all winter in an air tight drum. Pump gas staying fresh for 5-6 months.........well thats more of a gamble. Eric

I will try and clarify a little better. After I have mixed the pump gas and race fuel in the 55 gallons barrel, will they stay mixed in 55 gallon drum for a month or so until it's used up. Or do the two octanes seperate. I might be over thinking this but thought I would ask. I just don't want to mix 55 gallons of fuel and find out that they only stay mixture for X amount of time and then seperate. Meaning will I end up with one octane on top of the barrel and the other on the bottom?

They will stay mixed. But you do have to be concerned with it going bad. Don't mix ethanol fuel with av/race fuel. The ethanol attracts water which can build up from condensation. If you are going that route, keep them separate and add them together when you need them. Also, low lead av fuel can't go in your car. It will eat up your cat crap so don't dump it in at the end of the season.

We run 20% race. Just put 1 gallon of race in a 5 gallon jug and then fill with 4 gallons of premium. Then pour in sled. This gives the consistent ratio without the bulk amounts of fuel.

Thats how i do it too although often i will add it right to the tank if i know it will fit. If i ever question how much will go in i always error on having extra race.

I am planning on using 88 clear non oxygenated fuel to mix in with the race. I want to stay as consistent as possible on my fuel and get my vipec maps dialed in a little better. I to would rather error on the higher side but if you always keep adding more race fuel 10 tanks later you aren't that close to where you originally started on you mixture. I am going to try and stay at 98-99 octane. I put in 14.1 heads in my 910 this supper along with a couple other mods and would like to get it dialed in as quickly as possible. And the closer I can keep all the intangibles the easier it will be to get it dialed in.

Do you think 55 gallons of. Clear 88 and 110 will stay good for 3-4 weeks or should I do enough for 2 weeks at a time?

Thanks.

Don't mix ethanol fuel with av/race fuel. That's good to know.

The only thing ethanol fuel is good at for sledding is building a bonfire.

Like stated before, mix small batches of fuel in gas cans and fill your sled from the cans. You can go one step further and keep one can full and ready in the truck at all times so you don't have to go home to fill up.

We mix just like this in a 100 gal pickup tank for 3 sleds, if you are keeping the tank at a constant temp. like always outside or always inside it will work just fine and stay mixed, I would suggest a water seperator / fuel filter on the pump as you take it out. Big swings in themp. will make it condense moisture.

Don't get me wrong. I do it the day I ride as all pump fuel in Colorado has ethanol in it now. I'll mix it with Av fuel for my turbo setup. But I wouldn't mix ethanol with Av fuel in a 55 gal drum for the reasons I stated above. You just don't want it sitting around.

I decided I will just mix 5 gallon containers at a time. I have 4 of them so I could have 20 gallons mixed at any one time. It's 1/2 and 1/2 so it's pretty easy I can either just fill a container with race and take with me or take the container and fill it up and then add the race fuel when I get home. That way I am not worrying about 20+ gallons of race going bad if I can use it all in time.

Thanks for all the help and advice!!

Holy $hit $10 a gallon that's pretty steep IMO.

That includes a 1 time fee for the 5 gallon metal can. About 10 to 12 bucks. So take that off the next fill.
It is what it is. Back in the early 90's 110 octane at local station was 1.99.
