Missing Y-Pipe springs BD M8

Anybody had problems with springs missing on the y-pipe BD turbo. Not sure if the springs are breaking or coming off. Lost two so far.

When you pull your skid plate off you can take a look at them. They typically bounce around in the bottom of the sled until you get them out.

Most of the time I have found they break at the bend on one end or the other.

Are you using the slp turbo springs? They are STIFF as heck. Haven't had one of them break yet.

I would suggest getting a magnet and finding them. A few years back, on a fast, but rough road into a good riding area, I had one jump out of my belly pan and happened to get in the clutches.

Dangdest thing I ever experienced. I think it bounced just right and got inside the belt. The belt moved it in and out of both clutches. It took out both clutch faces before I could comprehend what the heck was causing all the ruckus.

Also keep in mind that sometimes springs break from harmonics(crank issues, solid mounts, etc) Good Luck!

Done the same

Run a bead on the outside for years. Cuts down on harmonic vibration. Helps keep the from breaking a bit. But they usually do break at the ends anyways.

As rec above. Fish them out, not worth all the trouble they can cause.

Do you know how much extra WEIGHT that must add??? :face-icon-small-sho

we usually just run a bead of it down the outside of the spring, that seems to work too... and saves at least 7.5 grams over filling the whole thing up!

If you were THAT worried about weight, you'd switch to a pro:)

Seriously though, I've ran a bead on the outside on every spring on every sled I've had and it worked very well........... until I owned a turbo. After breaking 2 springs from y-pipe to pipe and hearing Jared say to fill the springs, now I fill them and haven't had a problem since.

Also, I agree with finding and removing broken pieces. I've seen them wreak havoc on clutches and brake rotors.

odd, now that I think about it, I haven't broken a spring on either of the turbos... I lost them all the time on my 1000's. I was always feeling lucky that one never hit my clutches.

What springs are you using? I haven't broken a cat spring. I did break 2 of the springs that came with the kit. They are super stiff and maybe a bit more brittle.

springs

If they touch the y pipe they will break. The ones that we had made this year are working great I think I have only seen 2 put of 200 break. Yes if the are gone find them so you do not eat a clutch.

This is the first I heard of filling them with silicon, that seems pretty smart.
Although I have to admit I don't have a problem on my normally aspirated M8.
Jealous...

Well we silicon them after they're on, so I would assume it's when they've got tension on them. Would the silicon even flex enough to not fall apart when stretched?

You need to fix that fcr!!!

btw, do you guys fill them tensioned or loose?

X2 about fixing that silly natural aspiration!

Fill the springs with them installed. I haven't removed any of them since. I wonder if you remove the springs if it's necessary, or at least a good idea to clean them out and refill when reinstalling them?

lost 5 between two sleds and asked them if they had a bad batch or something. all f them were filled with silicone and stripped on the outside with silicone. installed right. nt touching y pipe and still lost one last time out.
super good tension on them though.
