Minnesota whitetail deer hunt

A couple friends and I are thinking of heading to Minnesota this year for a couple days of deer hunting with rifle/shotgun. Does anyone have some suggestions where to go? Any particular area better than another?

Pull up the regs and find the areas with intensive harvest for does. They will be the highest deer population areas.

you want big bucks or just MN swamp deer?

Big bucks head SE MN but it sees lots of hunters....course lots of hunters get good bucks.

Avoid area 174 north of McGregor....nothing but nasty swamp feed deer that don't grow horns....really I'm not BSing.

I hear Aitkin is nice;)

to tell you the truth i wouldn't drive across state lines to hunt mn. it's not worth the 200 dollar tag or what ever it is. the deer are not manageed here for trophy size at all. no rifle hunting in the southern half of the state. i would go out west montana wyoming

yes x rated there are some big bucks in southern mn over by mississippi. but the state as a whole really sucks for trophy hunting.

Can I ask a stupid "city girl" question? What is the difference between a shotgun and a rifle? I think I know but just want clarification so I don't sound like a bigger idiot than usual. Thanks.

shotgun with a slug is only good up to 100 yrds maybe more with todays bullets. i'am not real sure why the southern half of the state is shotgun only except less trees and mostly feilds. more homes in some areas.

According to the MN DNR the "shotgun only" rule was put into effect in the 1930s or 1940's when the deer populations was very low. Their idea was to restrict the deer harvest to those armed with relatively inaccurate smoothbore shotguns shooting slugs, so fewer deer would be harvested.

Thanks guys.

A rifle is much more powerful than a shotgun. It carries a higher amount of energy for longer distances, where as a shotgun looses kinetic energy much quicker. However, when a deer is short distance from the barrel tip, a shotgun can put a hole greater than a inch in diameter becasue the slug mushrooms so big. The rifle, with so much power, the slug is only small in diameter blows throw the animal with only a smaller hole......just my thoughts....this topic can carry on.

You are right a shotgun is only good for 100-150yds before the slug drops significantly (new rifled slug barrels help). I personally like shooting with a shotgun, only cause I live in shotgun zone, and when I do hunt in rifle area, I don't normally shoot longer than 150yds.
