minnesota seat belt....

So watching the news this morning, now in Minnesota the police can pull you over just to make sure you have your seat belt on... hmm they might as well throw away the idea of a search warrant and come up in everyones house to make sure were not using to much toilet paper as well...... I understand seat belts are a good thing but just wish the gov't would deal with problems instead of things like this.

I think the new law states that if an officer sees you not wearing a seat belt, they now can pull you over without any other driving offense. Before this law, they had to have another driving offense before they could pull you over for the seat belt violation.

But I agree, it should be more of a personal choice then a required law. I personally feel naked if I do not put my seat belt on.

should be a choice.. Plenty of accidents I've seen that they said "if he'd been wearing his seatbelt, he'd be dead." Granted, the odds of surviving a crash are way better if you have a seatbelt on, but it's not guaranteed.

the law states that, however they could pull you over and say that it didnt look like you were wearing it. and how will that work at night? kinda seems like a reason for them to be able to pull you over for no reason. but i usually wear mine anyway so it shouldnt be a problem

claim it will save as many as 100 lifes a year...and bring in Thousands of dollars in tickets. I say your dumb if you don't wear it, but that's your choice.

On a related note I can almost guarantee that I will be pulled over at least once this summer. A 4 hour car trip to the lake with a 4 and 1 year old, it's 100 percent that my wife will have to unbuckle and turn around to give someone something. Pretty sure I'm gonna end up saying something I shouldn't when that happens.

next they will set up random road blocks at midnight thru 3 am for "seatbelt checks" which will get their quota of drunk drivers for the month.

Its been that way here in NM ,But they give you the opportunity to attend a 2.5 hr class the first time or 2 points off your licsense. Seatbelt laws are total crap and are only about revenue PERIOD . If this was not the case 10 million kids a day would be belted on school busses. funny how they have stepped up enforcment of these types of laws in lean economic times:mad:

Here in Wa they just write you a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, whether you are wearing one or not.....they just say "I saw you didn't have your belt on, you just put it on when you saw my lights".....nothing but revenue generation, has NOTHING to do with saving lives. I know several people that got no belt tickets while they were wearing them, and there is nothing you can do to prove them wrong, you just have to pay the fine.

Excatly... lets protect the ppl 16 and up with a seat belt but " our kids" ahh lets just hope the bus doesn't get in an accident, and let the kids jump around.. O forgot.... give out more tickets= revenue, make a school bus safe= lost $....

And that doesn't even begin to cover motorcycles ! Dont get me wrong I feel the same way about riders rights!Im just making a point! If it was about saftey its hard to make the case about a seatbelt in terms of relative saftey!

This is another example of personnal freedoms that are being taken away every day. I just hope I'm still alive to see them all publicly executed when the revolution comes.

100% correct just another way for the government to strip freedoms and control people. Probable cause is just a BS word anymore.

Haven't been on a transit bus lately, but I don't think they got em either. Oh yea, gov't operated. What would happen if someone were to sue because they got injured on a bus because they had no option to wear a belt?? The bus deal has always had me confused.

They already have "sobriety checkpoints" in MN. They did them last summer in Anoka County a few times.

Don't get me wrong I think you should always wear your seat belt, but it should be your choice. But how long do you think it will be before they get helmets on all motorcyclists?

i think that this is the way it is in idaho too. it used to be a secondary violation and only a $5 ticket but now you can be pulled over for not wearing it. certainly sounds like a way to check drivers for other things, such as drinking and so forth. and they already do the random road blocks looking for DUI in island park and west yellowstone all the time. MPS could probably give us the idaho details.

We`ve had a seatbelt law in BC for as long as I can remember. Eventually, it becomes h abit. I still have to think about wearing a seatbelt every time I get into the car. My kids do it automatically.
I got pulled over in the mid 80`s cruising around in my 65 GTO. THe cop was writing me up for not weaing a seatbelt. It was dismissed becasue pre-68 vehicles weren`t all equipped with seat belts.

What I don`t understand is that school buses carry 100`s of thousands of kids every day yet they aren`t equipped with seatbelts. Makes you go Hmmmmmmmm.

yea the motorcycle is a good point, and the city busses.... hmm thanks guys now I'm even more worked up.. I'm sick of these people running things...
