I am so sick of hearing about this guy:mad:

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles spent $1.4 million to provide security, traffic control and other services for Michael Jackson's memorial service, city officials said as they looked for ways to have others help the financially troubled city pick up the bill.

The amount included $1.1 million in overtime pay for the 4,173 officers who worked to secure Staples Center, Forest Lawn cemetery and other areas that attracted fans and members of the media, the Police Department said in a statement.

City officials said Wednesday that the remaining amount covered traffic control, cleanup and other costs related to Tuesday's public memorial service, which was attended by a total of more than 17,000 fans and watched by tens of millions of people around the world.

Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, hailed the tally a success. He said it was "far less" than the initial estimate of $4 million.

Nonetheless, city attorney Carmen Trutanich said his office was investigating how the city can legally press third parties to pick up at least some of the tab.

Trutanich aims to have a report ready for the City Council by Friday, said spokesman John Franklin.

The city has also set up a Web site urging fans to make tax-deductible donations through credit cards, PayPal or check to help defray costs.

Fans have thus far donated $17,000, but contributions have been hampered by technical problems, Szabo said in a statement.

The site received so many hits that the servers crashed Tuesday night and several times Wednesday, Szabo said. The city's information technology department is working to rectify the problems.

Anticipating about 250,000 people would converge on downtown streets for the service, the Police Department deployed 3,240 officers starting at midnight. When only about 1,000 fans showed up, police brass let about 1,000 officers go early.

AEG Live, the owner-operator of Staples Center, has not committed any money to the Jackson memorial, which it organized and promoted. Company spokesman Michael Roth did not return messages on Wednesday.

City Controller Wendy Greuel called on the City Council to create a policy declaring who should pay for city services associated with such events.

In a letter to the emergency management department, Greuel criticized the nearly $49,000 expense for police officers' lunches, which were ordered from a restaurant located 80 miles from Los Angeles.

Greuel said her office called a local sandwich shop that could have provided box lunches for less than $17,500. The purchase would have had the added benefit of supporting a local business, she said.

The Jackson memorial was the second recent event that resulted in extraordinary costs at a time when the city is a half-billion dollars in debt and facing employee layoffs.

Last month's victory parade for the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers cost an estimated $2 million.

AEG Live gave $1 million to the city for that event and other private donors stepped in.

IMO, the family should cover that (I am sure they could sell a coffee table or something) but no way tax payers should have to pay for that...and I live in Canada...This world is ridiculous..........! OH sell that Oscar he bought years ago from Gone with the Wind or whatever it was,,,he paid 1.5 million for it....

I disagree with trying to bill the family. Instead, heads should roll. Fire the morons that approved the overtime and wasted the money in the first place.

I just buried a loved one. The city paid $0.00 for his funeral. The family had to pay the whole bill for security and traffic control. They actually put up the money because the deceased left none. I think I read MJ's estate was worth around 350 million. Why can't 1.4 be liquidated to cover the cost? Sick

I just got off the phone with the tax payers and they said "Sure, add it to our tab..... we don't care!" California is already broke and will be sending out IOU's instead of tax returns. Chances are the IOU's will be worthless to boot!

Every news channel but one has this wacky dude on 24/7 and I'm sick of it also. Did any of them report on the huge internet site hack that happened allegedly by North Korea?

How many hotels were full because people came to pay their last respects. I'm no MJ fan (you've read my jokes) but alot of people went to LA in the 10 days leading up to his memorial. Lots of those people stayed in Hotels, ate in restaurants, drank in bars, rented cars, took flights etc. It probably had an impact far greater than the 1.4 to 4 million the city spent (similar to the economic impact that a major sporting event would have on a city). MJ and his funeral never bankrupt the city or the state. THe politicians (both sides) did. Bury the politicians and you're getting somewhere.

Oh I wasn't implying MJ's funeral broke the city or state. Cali has had money issues for some time now. The family is should take care of their own which in my mind includes the funeral with related costs. Who let this turn into some big charade?

Just a thought but maybe LA. did it as a bit of and insurance policy. Did anyone watch any of the news and see the idiots that went to that circus? Can you imagine the amount of damage those people could have done if any of them got on "tilt" then stirred up the rest? I agree the estate/family should be sent the bill but I also think it could have been money well spent by the city too.

On a side note did anyone see any of this funeral service? I saw bits and pieces of it and I have to say if it didn't make me so sick to my stomach it was laughable the way the "family" acted. I have never in my life witnessed people doing everything they can to get themselves on TV. At one point toward the end of the service they nearly shoved/pushed one another out of the way so they could be in the front and get more TV time. I have never seen more FAKE FAKE FAKE DRAMA in my entire life!!! It was far beyond sickening. Pathetic doesn't even begin to describe their actions.

They spent more than that when the Lakers won the Championship....it's just another event. I wonder how much $$ it cost the family to rent Staples Center....and how much goes to the City??
