mesh hood or vent my stocker?

i have an 09 m1000 and i have the cutlers side vents and a boss seat. pretty much stock. for next season i plan on doing the slp exhaust with the cutlers intake. i was also looking to a mesh hood to save some weight and help with cooling but my question is, since most of the weight savings comes from removing the stock intake bs, is it more beneficial to vent my stock hood than buy a mesh one? i feel like i could strip a good ten pounds worth of crap off the hood from the stock intake when i switch the cutlers intake. at that point, it's not worth the 500 bucks for a diamond s or skins hood. any feedback?

ive got an slp pipe setup and 2 cool side vents, 2 cool vents on each side of my speedo, and frogskinz shock tower vents and nothing has melted, and it doesnt seem to get too hot under the hood. You already have side vents and you could pick up a set of speedo vents from 2 cool for 50 bucks, and fastlane mini flows would make pretty good shock tower vents for $20 apeice.

Depends what ur setup is.... Twins build alot of heat. Im not Running Twins But I noticed my Diamond S Hood Really cooled the clutches off alot. Cool to the touch. Really good on belt life. 500$ is a good deal but i paid 380$ alone just for shipping.

I was Thinking about venting my stocker but why.... You wont even come close to what you will get with a mesh..... Btw ITS WAY LOUD.

just to clarify, i dont wanna change my hood BECAUSE of the pipe, i want to do the pipe set up and then do something with my hood in addition to. since i will have to run a fuel controller due to the pipe and intake, i might has well change up my hood and try to lighten it up and also cool off the clutches. i like the idea of running my headlight and having my gauge cluster and the durability of the stock hood. i also like the idea of saving some weight with a mesh hood. from what it appears, a lot of the weight of the stock hood is in the intake ducting which i woudl remove when i install the cutlers intake. so.... all that being said, should i just cut up and vent my stock hood or actually spend the bucks on a mesh hood. i dont mind spending the money, but it seems like it might not be worth it. the whole weight savings of a mesh hood can almost be accomplished by eliminating the air intake system on my stock one.

Gutting and venting your hood will make a huge difference in letting the heat from the pipe escape,i think the ac air intake system was just made for stockers. Vents are a must as many as you can get my clutches always run cool due to the side vents and my under the hood temps are good due to the hood vent they work great. Talk to 1100cat on here he has great quality vents for sale.

Nice I run the same ventprefer this over the mesh hood. I run single pipes so there the line is drawn. Twins I would prob go with mesh hood.........

I run a gutted/vented hood, and my brother runs a diamond S.
My gutted hood is still at least 5-6 lbs heavier than the diamond S (just a guess).
My hood vents cost just over $100.00... I did the headlight delete and custom intake for next to nothing.

IMO, especially in your case, I would do a diamond S with their intake and kill 2 birds with one stone.
My brothers sled is a BB m7-m1000, and the hood and intake make a big difference on his sled, both cooling under the hood, cool intake air, and good deep snow performance.
No matter how much you vent a stock hood, you cannot vent enough to match the benefits of a mesh hood.
My .02

If it were a (vent on a budget ?), then I would opt for the gutted stock hood.

the only big thing holdin me back from the mesh hood at this point is losin my light and gauge cluster. for the 5 pounds difference, i think it might be worth keepin the stocker

You don't have to lose the gauge cluster with the diamond S...they make a pod for it that looks pretty good.

yep...it pays for itself in belt savings...my freight was over 400 bucks...:eek:

Has anybody ran the top hood vent with twins? It seems to me like my twins might melt that one.

I rode my m7 with Jaws twins with that vent in the hood and it was fine for 3 rides. Then I blew it up and big bored it..............

i installed my guage cluster on a guage handlebar mount/bdx/timbersled and then mounted two small 55 watt lights on the bottom side of guage bracket

I bought the gauge pod for my diamond s and it works great if you want to keep the gauge, as far as the light, I have a 55w light mounted underneath the hood above the head on that flat sheet metal. Where that's at, I don't have light for night riding, I have it just to save my ecu, but I've seen people put the light on their handlebars, then you'd have the light with the hood. Just a thought. With my BB, my sled runs much better in the deep snow with the mesh hood. Before I think the motor would get heat soaked (and I had the hood vented without lights) in deep powder, but with the mesh it doesn't unless I'm pulling one of those WOT pulls that is about 3 minutes long, and I don't think any amount of venting will stop that.
