Melted secondary?

01' zx, motor work, 162. still running the Formula secondary with a dalton blue spring, straight 44 helix through 19/47 gearing and 7 tooth, 3" pitch drivers. Older belt too.

While climbing out the top of a long pull the other day I did what I thought was a smoked belt. Through open the hood and found the the belt was still kinda intact, but the secondary sheaves had been melted! I mean the very bottom of the sheaves on full shift out had been melted, and blown out 3 windows in between the webbing.

I've kinda been screwing with my clutching lately so I'm wondering if I'm on the right track here, not enough preload in the secondary spring? Wouldn't this cause slippage on full shift and cause heat to build in one section? I'm just lost as to why it took the clutch instead of just blowing a belt!

Thanks for the help ahead of time guys, anyone got a Formula secondary setting around!? haha

That was an issue in 2001, I saw one back then that got so hot the splined steel sleeve in the center came out at full shift down a lake and made a real mess of a brand new sled. If memory serves me right, doo gave the guy a new machine. Caused by belt slippage when the belt is bending around the small diameter of the secondary at high speeds, it was a one year issue as far as Im aware.
