Medicine Bow forest ATV/ORV questions

Looking to come that way sometime this summer with a side by side ( Commander).

It will be the first time of us going to this location during the summer with a side by side.
How are the trails there?
Are some of them different experience levels?
Is there enough riding for a few days?
Will the Trails be wide enough for a commander?
If you come from out of state do you just need to buy the out of state sticker to be legal?
Best place to camp out there?

Any other tips would be great since it would be the first time out there.

Thanks in advance.

yes there are lots of roads/trails that are open to utv/atv's.

yes you are required to purchase a ohv tag to drive within the national forest and blm lands.

my wife and i put over 3000 miles on our rzr in the snowys last year alone.!!

I would just pick an area and explore... There are lots of marked legal trails that aren't on the map.

Just make sure if traveling alone you carry repair/recovery gear. Some of the roads can get nasty, and there aren't alot of people in most areas so don't bet on help miraculously showing up.

One road that is worth the drive is fs road 215 (I believe). It goes to the top of Kennedy peak and the view is spectacular especially around sun rise / set.

Off topic but isn't there a ranger or somebody who is stationed up at kennedy peak in the summer time. Watch for fires & what not????

Not any more. When the Forest made cuts... That person got cut. I think you can rent that lookout tower for a night our two tho. Then you can look out.

This is sort of off topic, is there any reason that you can't sled from Kennedy Peak to the west? Been up there several times in the winter, its a great view, but there never seems to be tracks going west. We have ventured a little ways, but didn't want to get into trouble. Seems to be some fun looking slopes over there. Thanks

I assume your meaning north west.. The pennick mtn area. If so, it is closed to motorized use November thru April for winter animal range.

Headed down there this weekend with my father to explore the mountain before we go hunt for his moose. We are taking the klr's and going to camp on the mountain. Our thinking is trying to learn some of the area from libby flats south. Are there any good camping spots up there? I have only been there for one weekend the winter before last. Be dang good learning experience for me so i know the mountain better so i can do a lot of sledding when i move down there.

Check with the fs before you go. They just shut down a bunch of roads because of the fire. It would stink to get up there and then realize you can't go where you want to.

It might be a rough ride with a camper crossing Libby Flats - (it has been A LONG time since I have done it), but we have camped at Bear Lake and Silver Run Lake (not Silver Lake) on the east end of Libby Flats.

All roads have been re-opened as far as I know - We were up there last weekend and rode the ATVs from Rob Roy up to the sheep herders cabins in Nelson Park and everything was open.

We had a bunch of moose hanging around our cabin last weekend, no big bulls though - just cows/calves and young bulls.

I had to work really hard for these pictures - walk out onto the deck and aim the camera towards the salt blocks....

Not quite sure where we are going to camp at but we only have a slide in camper with a small trailer. I need to take some more time and look at a map as well. Tmk keep your eye out for a monster bull, I know a guy with a tag haha.

Can he hunt anywhere in the snowy's with that tag, or only certain areas? I am not familiar with how the moose tags work.

In years past we hardly ever saw bulls at our cabin, it was all cows and calves. This year it is the opposite - we only have one cow/calf that is coming around and a lot of young bulls (so far). I'll keep an eye out and let you know if we see any big ones.

Had a great trip although it was a quick one. Lots of cool and fun roads down there. Seen one pretty good bull but wasnt really looking for them that much. Sure was a nice cool weekend with some rain. As far as I know all of the snowies and the madres are in the hunting area.

Glad you had fun!

We were up there too - it rained pretty hard early Friday afternoon, and then just some sprinkles and light showers after that.

We didn't see as many moose this weekend - saw a huge mule buck Friday evening though.

I think those moose tags are good for the WHOLE forest including the area east of Laramie... I think thats dumb... but I also havent drawn a tag. LOL Im sure when I draw I will be happy its that way.

I definetly did not notice that you posted since i read last... I have been down there twice looking for moose and dad has went down 3 times most recently last weekend and was pretty pleased with what we found. The first is coming fast cant wait for a few days of a new hunting experience!

Where is your cabin at?

~11 miles up the trail from Albany. I will send you a PM with a more precise description. Glad to hear you are seeing some moose when you go up there. A couple of weeks ago there were some pretty good sized bulls hanging around that meadow north of the Rob Roy boat ramp.
