MCX 180 Quicky Update

After putting on 2000 kms on the 180 kit this past season, here's a quick summary of problems.......ZIP! Other than me hitting a tree near the end of the season and taking out the turbo pump/magneto cover, the sled ran flawlessly. Need a brace to protect this area.
I just took it all apart this past week for an inspection, the only thing I found wrong was that the air cooler tube that passes from the tunnel area up and through to the plenum intake hose, has a severe wear spot on it. It would appear it was rubbing on the tunnel where the hole is cut for it to pass through, almost cutting right through the aluminum pipe. This area has been "rubberized" to prevent further damage. Everything is still tight, nothing whatsoever loosened up anywhere, indicating that the fit and finish of the kit was second to none.
One thing to make sure of is when you route the braided lines, to ensure you put some rubber over them where they might rub against something. I noticed a bit of abrasion on the head cover from where the turbo pump line was routed.
There has been many posts on the power that these kits put out and that riders should opt for more HP. From the 3 of us that have these kits now on our sleds and for 90% of the guys out there, you don't need more! Sherm

Congrats on your kit. Can you elaborate a bit more on the power of the kit. Would you say the sled now climbs comparable to an M1000 or better? I'm just about to drop some serious coin on an impuls and iI find it hard to believe that 180hp is enough.

I would say better. An M1000 might be similar in HP, but the torque that the Nytro produces is rediculous. Also remember - it's 180 Hp at any elevation.
It is teaching me a new riding style.:face-icon-small-coo

I agree the M1000 has less HP, but it is also a bit lighter. I was just more curious if guys considered the 180 kit more of an equalizer, rather than an arse kicker.

Well, it just so happens that we sled with a M1000 fella, and his wasn't stock. He had the big bore 1200 kit on it, he figured pushing 200+ HP. We did some of our "usual" hills this past season when we had a good dump of snow, the Nytro whipped his butt! So much in fact, that he got onto my sled and took it for a burn, thinking something just wasn't right. When he got back he was all smiles and simply said "Holy f#@*!!!" . He said the track speed was crazy and he didn't even have it matted, it just seemed to "float" up and over the hill! I had the same reaction for the XP and Dragon guys, who all stole my sled when the snow got deep! Ya, I know, the big boost kits will go that much faster but again, for this "old" guy, this is a sweet setup! Sherm

The way your describing the kit is music to my ears. Whats the hardest part about installing these kits yourself ?

Getting it all unwrapped! I guess the worst part for us backyard wrenchers is getting the exhaust cut and welded. Its pretty important to make sure that everything is lined up properly before you tack weld it and then get it fully welded, because thats how its all going to go back together. I made sure all the bolts were tightened up and stuff was sitting where it was supposed to before I welded it, which includes putting the muffler on and bolting it down. Other than that the rest of the kit fit in pretty simple, especially after the 3rd one! Sherm

Thanks for tips regarding the hoses rubbing. I am getting ready to install my kit in the next couple of weeks. I have a light weighted 2008, Timbersled everything, a 156" CE, and an Excell Vector header with under tunnel exhaust and it rips pretty good as-is. The 180 kit should be a blast. Can't wait.

The welding would be my biggest challenge, but we have many fab shops in the area. I'm going with MCX180. Thats final. thank you for all the feedback.

Those reactions have been occurring ever since the first turboed RX1s hit the snow back in 03. I remember seeing my first one at 6lbs and that was impressive. That 200HP M1000 was lucky if it was making 160 at 6000'. Remember, 3% per 1000ft as far as power loss is concerned normally aspirated.

Installed my 180 kit last year on a 2010 Nytro. This kit is the real deal. Great throttle response, consistant performance, tons of usable power. Go get one, you will not be disappointed. :face-icon-small-hap

On a side note. We have built a jig and are offering an exchange program for the exhaust flange welding. We just charge out our cost from the fab shop in an effort to ease installation. $189.00 exchange on a new header and $289.00 if you are sending back an older used one. MCX spends a huge amount of time and money dyno testing. All of the H.P. figures are garaunteed. Sometimes it feels as though our kits are under rated when compared on the snow with competitor kits. That is the difference between true H.P. and approximate calculations or wild claims. A real 180 H.P. is quite a handfull and is more than enough to satisfy 90% of the riders out there.

Been following the 180 kit thread for a bit here...sounds like all owners are qwuite happy....cool!

Have 2 Doo 180 kits for 1200's coming, hopefully we have just as good of luck.

Have most of you been running straight pump premium or have you been adding some insurance with 100LL or some 110?

Thanks,
RK

I just put my name in for a 2009 nytro with the 180 mcx on it. going to have a 162 camo extreme and timberskid with ice age rails on it right out of the box. Im coming off a alpine turbo vector that ran 18-19lbs all the time. so i am a little scared of dissapointment. I hear good things, but will it be good enough? time will only tell. one option i am looking at is turning the boost up to 10-11 lbs and running a mix of c12. anyone do this yet?

If you're used to 18-19 lbs on an Alpine boosted Vector I can pretty well guarantee that you'll want more than what the MCX 180 can deliver.

Not to highjack, but if anyone is interested I have a Nytro with a MCX180 kit and a bunch of other mods for sale. The sleds in Alaska right now, but it's getting shipped down to Utah for the winter. Just p.m. me

Has anyone tried turning up the boost to about 10lbs and running 50/50 race gas? 200hp would be the magic number for me.

Will the stock injectors be ok at 10lbs?
