May 18, 1980

29 years ago;

I was camping at Clear lake, (top of white pass). We were on the smooth lake in a raft when a series of 5 waves came across. Then it got dark and started raining dry ash. We headed out in a hurry, in our International Scout (like the one in the photo!). They closed the pass, so we spent the next 8-10 hours in a resturant on Rimrock lake. I shovelled ash into garbage bags to take home and sell. I was 13.....

Thanks for the photo's, now I see how you got the name: vol. Climber. Must have been something to be on a lake that close when she went off?

I was on a m/c trip on the Oregon coast with a girl-friend. Found out I-5 was closed and changed our plans. I was a young 28 back then.....

It was quite the memory! Long story, thats the short version....We ended up abandonding the Scout (25,000 miles orig.) as it inhauled some ash. Insurance totaled it. Sad!

Any other stories from peeps who were close by during this event? I was far far far away (and young to boot) so we watched it on TV and it seemed like just another "tv show". ie not real.

Here is a pic of my cousin and I over near Mardon resort. It stranded us for two days over there since I-90 was closed. I have the baseball cap on in the picture...........I was 10 years old.

P.P.

I remember it very well. I sat on the roof of the house with my dad and a friend and watched the cloud plume grow until we were getting dusted out from the ash only hours later! I can't believe it has been that long!!

Excellent photos !!! Going too have to show my Dad.... I wish we had some. The ash was about a foot deep on white pass. I remember it was like driving in snow, but it was very heavy and super loud on the bottom of the car, yet it blew up light behind us like smoke.

Pumpkin - that's a pretty cool collage you posted! :beer;

X2!!

I remember how DARK it was that day. The ash falling everywhere & the TV coverage was HUGE!! Anyone else remember seeing Abraham Lincoln in the plume?

It was a chitty summer. Weather sucked.

I call May 18th Mt St Helens Day.

I would love to explore the area someday.

We lived in Carson in the 70's and spent a lot of time snowmobiling on St. Helens. I worked for the FS so spent some time at Spirit lake and even saw Harry Truman. Never officially met him. One thing that sticks in my mind was a photo in his lodge...the Spirit lake Lodge...of about a hundred float planes all sitting in a line that streatched almost clear across the lake.

Mt. St. Helens from Old Man Pass, Feb. 1976.

Great 1976 photo! I dont remember the mountain then, full size....

Tumblina, it really is a great place to ride. The scenery is awesome. 3mountains in view, while your standing on 1 !!! I drive 3-3 1/2 hours from pierce county and its worth it. They have a really nice warming hut in the parking lot, stocked with wood for the woodstove. Some of the best riding in the state.

Yip, cool indeed. But I couldn't help but notice that you were not as homley..........what happened? :)

I was in Utah and my best of best buddy moved to Ephrata that year. He sent me some ash in the mail and my mom thought it was drugs......
