Material that goes on a SLP pipe

Anyone know where I can find the material ( besides SLP ) that goes between the clamp and the pipe itself to protect it? It is a braided material - asbestos? fiberglass? Not sure what it is made of. I need to mount a muffpot on the wifes M8 (OR ELSE!) and do not want to damage the pipe.
Thanks in advance!

if your going to mount it, do it directly to the pipe it works better with the heat transfer. the insulation you are refuring to is more for reducing pipe harmonics' than protecting from the bands making marks on the pipe if i remember correctly!... if you have a local auto parts store with a decent parts guy he can prolly find some header wrap or such that will work just fine....good luck
p.s. if you can keep the clamps tight thay dont do too bad at marking a pipe up, its when thay get loose and vibrate!

It's the same material as header wrap, it will insulate your muffpot from you pipe and not heat your food very well.

I just need it 1" wide - enough to cover the width of the clamp - not going to effect the heat transfer.

It's flat ceramic rope. Comes in an unbelievable number of sizes and styles. Commonly used in the industrial boiler/furnace world for fire-side manway gasket. Check your yellow pages for a local boiler outfit and if they are worth a spit they will have the exact stuff you are looking for. Some commercial insulating places stock it as well.

As stated above speed shops also sell it as header wrap but the mark-up is stupid.

will check the auto stores tomorrow first as that is the closest / easiest fix.
Then the yellow pages for a boiler/furnace co. Thanks for the replies !

OK - interesting. The insulation will only be as wide as the clamp itself basically - leaves a lot of surface space on the pot to heat still - I would think. I am not covering the entire space that the bracket for the muffpot rides on the pipe - just the hose clamp going around the pipe.

It will affect the heat transfer a lot. I tried it and removed the insulation.

The airspace between the pipe will transfer heat but not nearly as much as a metal to metal contact. Put your fingers a 1/2" from the pipe and then touch the pipe. You will figure out real quick which one transfers heat better.

Yes it does. I want to mount the muffpot on the can and would like to protect the can from the clamp if I can. Auto store had it - 1" wide , 50' roll , 30 bucks though. Got a line on another place that sells it in shorter lengths. Maybe I should buy the 50' length and sell 5' lengths on here to whoever needs it !!

doesn't the slp come with that little strip under the clamp.

Did it - heats up just fine - Chimachungas were steaming hot after the first couple hours we were up there. And should alleviate marring up the can.
