Me and Bud heading out 3-26 for some spring riding .Wondering if I could get some input from on how you think your snow is going to hold up in the Rabbit Ears area /Vail Pass looking just to get out and ride .Does not have to be perfect Just want to do some booning /hill climbing trail riding . Will Be staying in Avon. Any tips much appreciated

If you're staying in Avon, consider riding Red and White out of Vail by going up Red Sandstone road. This is by far the closest riding to you and there is a ton of Terrain.

The local club up there grooms the road

Granted the road is mostly used to access the good riding areas.

Take Red Sandstone road up. On the switchback (paved) Forest Service road 700 breaks off and turns to dirt/snow pack. You can take that up to a turn around where there is a gate, head back (to the entrance) and find a parking spot.

Thanks for your reply Do you think the snow you have is going to hold out to the first of of April ? We plan on arriving March 27

March and April are our biggest snow months.Rabbit Ears pass is at 9400' and Vail Pass is 10600'.Arapahoe Basin ski area(1/2 hour from VP)has gotten 10 feet of snow in April before.Check the ski areas http://www.coppercolorado.com/winter/index.html http://www.vail.com/mountain/current-conditions/snow-and-weather-report.aspx http://www.steamboat.com/the-mountain.aspx for their webcams and snow reports as well as US Govt snotel sites http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/webmap...&base=esriNgwm&lat=40.000&lon=-105.150&zoom=8 The ski areas tend to lie a little but snotel is true data.I've rode VP in late May before.

I live in and know these areas very well. VP usually has great snow this time of year and it's only 1/2 hour away from Avon with a groomed mountain trail system. Red & White is great locals riding but the problem this year is that the main road is about 75% closed for a bogus winter timber sale. The logging company is plowing the road which makes it tough for newbies in the area to get around. Rabbit Ears is a good 1.5 hours from Avon through the Trough road. Great riding but much lower than the actual riding area of Vail Pass.
