Mag and Stator check??

Hi, on my last ride, as driving along the trail, I could smell some burnt electrical smell while riding, ..I looked down at the MFD unit, ..it flashed and went dead. All electrical went dead, no lights, no hot grips, no MFD. The engine continued to run for awhile, ..I headed down off the mountain towads the truck. It quit a few times, but would fire up, ..it would only run around 5400 rpm at best guesstimate. It died at the truck and has not run since.

Back at the house, I checked the plugs for spark, which it has, but no power to anyhting else, including the elctrical fuel pump. I have pulled all of the wires out for inspection, ..no problems found. I cannot find the source of the original burnt smell. I am suspecting perhaps the voltage regulator may be at fault?????

Can anyone post the Stator and Mag checks please for this unit (05, 900 RMK), ohms and wire reference please.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

CR

Before you doo that, try disconnecting your hot grips (the electrical plugs that go to your handle bars) A shorted to ground hot grip will cause the hole elctrical system to malfunction Due to the brilliance of NO FUSES going to the hand warmers. I've seen this on 3 900's now.

If your dash and lights come back up after disconnecting...then you know where to look. If not, try disconnecting the chassis relay. This will help you narrow down your probable short to ground. Hopefully you get this figured out before the ECM popps.

DD, I have inspected and unplugged the hot grips as a precaution early in my search here, no problems there, however, where is and what is the "chassis relay"??

Thanks

Chassis relay runs along the wiring harness just to the inside of the support plate on the mag side of the sled. If you follow the exhaust sensor wires that plug into the main harness, you should be able to find the relay.

The other thing I'd check also would be the tailight wiring running under the seat. Another common source for a short to ground.

Well I finally got around to going through the Stator checks last night.

Specs in manual are;
- 0.13 ohms between each of the three yellow wires
- no continuity from any yellow to brown, or ground

The remaining checks listed in the manual are for igintion related problems, all of these remaining checks were right on with specifications. (as well, the ignition sparks fine, just no power output)

However, my stator appears to be faulty with the following values recorded

- 0.78 ohms between #1 & #2 yellow wires
- infinite, or zero continuity between #2 & #3
- infinte, or zero continuity between #1 & #3
- no continuity between any of the three yellows and brown, (or ground).

Can anyone with experience please comment as to if; first of all, am I doing the checks correctly. Secondly, considering my test results, have you seen this before, what may be at fault and why would it happen?

I can only presume that a new stator from Polaris will be costly. I looked up part number #4010727, stator, 2005, RMK 900. Can anyone tell me how much this item sells for, (Cdn or US).

Thanks for all the help guys.

Does anybody have any idea about the Regulator, would it have been damaged as well, or perhaps at fault??? I assume that there is no way to TEST the regulator, correct??
