M8 Stock Airbox/vent delete?

Is it worth removing the stock system for a screened version drawing air from under the hood? I know the BDX and timbersled versions are popular. I like the idea of the stock system being more consistant especially in deep snow.

Rid of it now !!!!...Go with the BDX intake but DO NOT vent your nose cone as much as suggested...Also do some venting on the cover that BDX supplies...( Small rounds are sufficient) Do this to compensate for when you are riding in deep powder and your entire nose is buried..The M8 does not need all the venting that the M1000 needs, but your 08 M8 will need more fuel thrown at it, at anything less than 5k feet if you have installed a aftermarket y & pipe....Vent that entire area on your hood where your old intake was and you will decrease your under hood temps alot...MO Flow sells a perfect hood vent for this area...Also the AMP Cage gauge acts as a great chimney, Allowing the heat to leave engine compartment...Hope this helps....I messed with many different set-ups on mine before really finding that sweet spot with this set-up...Ride-On !

I'm not so sure. Every pic I have of the M7 I ride has the front end covered in snow. This past weekend I was following my buddy on an XP. He was trying to break trail, his intakes are about mid hood on that sled. It totally bogged out, the higher mounted stock M intakes kept me going right on past him.

Depends on your use. We just have way to much light powder that seems to want to ride around on my hood. In that case, you are sucking hot underhood air. I would love to loose some wieght but I think the higher the cold air intake is mounted, the better. There is no airflow in the front where we ride.

Removed my stock intake and have had no problems. I installed timbersled intake and a bunch of MO FLOW vents. Stays so cool under the hood that the little bit of snow that gets under the hood does not melt.

I have the BDX intake on my M1000 and love it int he powder it doesn plug off, if the front get covered in snow then it will suck in front of the shocks.

I have ridden in powder over the windsheild and they have pluged off their intake vents with snow where I had no issues.

a bashed to death subject but

stock all M's need air intake help...........if you ride all the time.

In nice conditons ripping right along no issues.

Slow tough going , stock setup, they all suck by design hot air.........not good for hp.

Slow tough going the front only air boxes.........well they suck hot air too, but your efi does an ok job of making it clean with less hp.

Make your stock plenum suck more only cold air, that covers the most conditons. Don't ride in the rockies with axx deep 30 degree fluff, never had your M stop, never going to that part of the world, don't worry about it, make any screen for the efi up front..........you gota firecat.

Looking for hp.......keep dreaming.

want to loose weight..........cut the snacks.

Take all the venting off of you hood including the rubber boot, leave the stock air silencer in place. Now put some prefilter-screen over a cone or anything you construct to make a dome to keep moisture from pooling,(this way the air sensor and flow isn't altered) seal the bottom with some marine sealant and rivet it on the intake hole. Then drill some holes in your hood/bellypan/nose-cone to get the cold air moving in and bingo, weight reduction and cold air to your intake and you don't have to spend $200! I used this setup on my m8 last season and this season. It works better than stock. Someone I know bought an aftermarket kit from BDX I think, and he ending up going back to stock. Although it seems from what everyone has said on here, alot of people are having good luck with the BDX kit. This setup I use works as well. Hope it helps for anyone who is wondering.

Speedwerx is charging $400 for the sno pro race intake setup but altered in some way. Has anyone used that setup? Or has anyone tried just using the sno pro mod race sled intake? I wonder where to mount the ecu with that intake.

I have the sno pro mod setup in myn installed by volk performance and it works great!

Where did they mount the ecu box? I assume the air sensor is mounted in the upper plastic on the frame of the air box. Could you post a picture of it please. I have a sno pro and was thinking about pullln it and tryn it on the M. Thanks!

Maybe it's just me and I haven't had my M8 for two long now, just about a year and 600 miles but my sled runs great with the stock system. I'm all for mods too but this is one I just can't get behind 100%. Now I haven't ridden a sled with the BDX of Timbersled but we get lots of dry, fluffy snow here, haven't lately and i've had no problems with the stock intake at all. The only problem i've noticed is that snow will get built up in the front nose cone and freeze and the next morning you can't open the hood. I put on some frogskinz screens in the on the 4 front vents but haven't ridden it yet in deep snow to see how those work. I don't know how much hp you gain or weight loss though if that's what you're after. Just my .02

you drop weight. Weight reduction = faster

hey

Cool ideas on modding the stock intake for sure guys. I'm running a bdx intake, and its awsome. Seal up all cracks with silicone, and tape up the cover so no snow gets in thru the top. I finally punched a couple of small holes in vents this weekend due to the fact my 3yr son was on sled, and the nose was lower than usual. I kind of wish I would have modded my stock intake, but really like the idea behind the bdx intake. The only problem in my mind with a modded stock intake is you will suck in under hood air no matter how many vents you use. The bdx only draws air from outiside the hood. I'v been in 3ft of fresh, and never had a bog, oh yeah, my skis are usaully way off the ground. :face-icon-small-coo

Since the stock intake system pulls cool outside air but is located under the hood and runs over the pipe, i would question how much cooler the air is when it gets to the engine compared to a well vented sled with intake drawing from the front of sled. I think most people mod the intake to lose weight off of the front of the sled.
