M8 starts and runs great for a short time...then dies

First off, I have searched the forums using the search feature and cant come up with this issue or any insight...

Anyway, The sled is a 2008 M8 SP, has always run great, but at the end of last season, it started to bog a bit and lose rpms after running great for about 15 mins. It only seems to do this in deeper snow, I dont have this issue on the trail.

Ill be riding the sled, carving turns, climbing hills, etc, and the sled will start to lose rpms, followed by what seems to be a slight throttle sticking and intermittant power, then the sled will just shut off on its own. I cant restart it until I wait about 5-10 minutes then it starts back up and runs ok for about 5 more mins then dies again. I am now running the SLP pipe kit, but it was doing this last season with the stock pipe as well.

Anyone have any ideas? I have already replaced the throttle cable after finding a nice kink in it and it didnt seem to change anything. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it might be running out of gas. Check for some kind of obstruction in the fuel system. It may be letting enough fuel through for a while then blocking it off.

I'd pull the pipe and check both cylinders and make sure they aren't scored. It's kind of sounds like a stator starting to go bad. If you have EGT's you can usually watch one cylinder drop out just before it dies. Once the sled cools back down it will start again. Make sure you haven't squeaked a piston, then test the stator.

My first guess would've been the stator, but when you stated that it only does it in deep snow conditions that would lead me to believe it would be something else. Have you noticed an excess of snow coming into the bumper vents? Maybe its an intake problem. If your getting alot of snow coming into the engine bay and then hitting the hot temps from the motor it could be creating steam and messing with your ecu readings. Do you run frogskins on your front vents? Or, like someone else suggested, it could be a fuel issue. GL

After you do what is said, completely empty the gas tank and check for problems and look at the screen and check valves. Check plug wires to often the rub on something and where through causing a short.

Fuel tank isnt obstructed with anything, Ill have to have a look at the pistons when I get the chance. I have the hood sealed quite well, so I dont think its a snow ingestion problem either...Any easy way to run a quick diagnostic on the stator?

hmm

sounda just like my sator ran like that 2 rides then finally die got tow out.but that was m1000. dam sators aint cheap 649.00 hope thats not it.

If there is any water in the fuel it will screw you. If you havent emptied it completely, I would. Do what was mentioned first though.
