M8 pump gas vs. m1000

Alright I am a believer. Last year we ran against some pump gas 800's that were far from awsome with our M1000's. After racing last year you could not sell me an 800 pump gas...Yesterday the arctic cat guys here in town invited me and another guy out to ride their new 2010 M8 162 Boondocker pump gas set up running 7.5 psi. First race was at Jefferson bowl with two piped non-ported 1000's. At first I was pretty dissapointed with the sled. 1000's would take it out of the hole bad and the hill was too short for the turbo to make up the difference. We decided to go to the rock cliffs by Moose park. Wow, this is where we got our a$$'s handed to us. Snow was fluffy and about deep. He was wheeling out of the top while we were barely pulling it. The thing was insane for only running 7.5 psi. Totally sold on pump gas set-ups. We have two piped and ported 1000's that usually ride with us but they are both down right now, but I don't know if it would have made a difference in the deep and steep. I think the one sled could take it in a hard pack drag race but where we were racing yesterday I don't think it would run as good as the pump gas was running. There was a noticable weight difference too, turbo felt way lighter. We were concerened with the lag at the bottom end and when you start playing around with it you learn to keep it spooled up and you don't even notice it. The only time you notice it is from a dead stop race hard pack. They are still tweeking with it and hopefully they will clean up the bottom end a bit. I was starting to get a little bored with sledding this year and after yesterday it was like a hit of cocaine, you get that I got to have more feeling.

I have noticed that in the deep is where my 1000 turbo shines. It just keeps on pulling hard when the NA are only making it 1/2 up the hill and power is fading off.

I was impressed after we got it to some deeper snow and steeper hills. My 1000 is pretty much stock motor, d/d pipe,y, and can, some clutching, timbersled rear skid, and a one off ecu program and some light weight junk and it was day and night difference in the deep snow. By the way if anyone is thinking about going to kings hill this weekend go, it is great snow still.

Good to hear the difference from the 08 or so setups, I'm about as far from a believer in PG 8's as you'll find, just haven't run across any that impressed me.

I'll have to try a newer setup, it sounds like things have gotten better.

I think the set ups might be a bit better but for the most part guys running these sleds with stock fuel systems above 5 to 6K can push the boost over 8 psi with good fuel...not pump gas. they run night and day better than 6 psi.

On my sled in back to back testing in good snow 2 psi is worth 10 mph track speed. you say it everytime and you are right once you get a taste of 10-12 psi on a M8 it's tough to go back. I will have more injectors and fuel pump power next season for sure. I have been running mine at 8 PSI with race fuel and am going to try straight 100LL this weekend. My duty cycle is close to max and I know I shouldn't but I can't go back... i won't go back.

Backcountry, I know what you mean I was on the same side of the fence as you before this. Funny thing is if we had just raced on Jefferson bowl and went back to the trailer you could not have given me that sled over mine. After riding it in the deeper snow on some decent hills it was impressive. Still not a big fan of the power claw track it was running though, especially on a turbo. You can climb just about anything but coming down is always exciting... I don't think they make a better track then the camo extreme.

rode with 5 or so M8 pump gasers this year, the 5lb runners are kinda gay

but, a splash (1 gallon) of 112 can allow you to run 8-11lbs at high alt

next year i aim to keep it at 50/50 and 13lbs

at the end of day, a M8 needs 13ish lbs to beat a M1000 running at 5lbs.....dont read too far into boost level, many many other factors need to be considered

from what i gathered while moving from 16-20 down to 6-11lbs,

6 was gay
7 was gay
8 seemed like another 50hp over 7
10 is better
11 felt the same as 10

I agree with Hatchers , my 8 will never go below 12 again . My brother rode my bone stock 09 SP 162 M1 with a 2010 RTR 162 8 last week. They rode in deep snow and were getting stuck all day .

He said the turbo could beat the M1 , but not by much . The RTR was running 7 lbs . If the M1 had room to get moving it was close , but when there was no room the 8 would pick on it.

My M1 will be race gas next year , but i might try pump gas boost settings . But it will have some Sunoco in the tank when i do.

HOW ABOUT COMPARING M1000 W/ SLP SETUP W/PG TM8

THE HP ABOUT THE SAME 192-205 RANGE, SLP KIT FOR M1000 IS AROUND $1200, HAIRBLOWER IN M8 $6000 WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE

M1000 VS PG M8

I ran both this year boosted 8 needs 8-9 pounds to out run ported m1000 on hill in deep snow but then m1000 still more fun becouse of the tq. After a season pgm8 going down road.I will go with my m1000 next year. I like tighter rideing and dont pull long chutes 1000 works for me, if only ac would look at performence of m1000 after port job and sell stock 190 hp m1000 .

the horse power may be the same at a said elevation around 7-8 pounds but as we go up in elevation the m1000 will be afected far more than the m8 and will lose more power at say 9000feet. And then come the great part I can turn up the boost and make the m1000 look like a 600. But yes the turbo is alot more money but the smile is also alot bigger imo. Oh and i had 4500 in my 09 dragon bpgt and that was with everything. It flat packs the mail at 10pounds. I will be building a m8 turbo this summer turbo cost around 4500 again and thats for everything. Rodger

The other 1000 that was riding with us that day was an 09 slp 1000 set up with timber sled front end, rkt clutching and power claw track and even my d/d setup with a camo extreme would put a hurtin on that. I think the fun factor was way better on the pgt, we pretty much tried to burn it down and it just kept pullin wheelies. It did start to cut out after 15 or so times in row up the hill but after sitting for 10 mins or so it was back to running like a champ.
