M7 speedometer

On a 2006 m7 do they have a speedometer sensor what would cause the speedometer to quit working?

That's pretty common. On the diamond drive under your left footwell there is
a 2 plug connector that leads to your speedo sensor. Might be easiest to find it on a parts diagram at country cat website. $18 I think.

I'd pull your DD, open it up and check it out. Lots of times when the sensor quits working, it's because you have metal build up inside the case. It can mean that some gears or bearings are about to go. Hope you don't find anything, but I'm speaking for unfortunately too much experience.

how do you go about changine that out? what is the best/easiest way?

The best is to just pull the DD off. To do that, first pull off your belt, then the secondary clutch, then take the long bolt from your brake side that goes inside the drive shaft (5/8" bolt I believe), unplug the connector that goes to the sensor that WYsteph mentioned, then take the nuts off that hold your DD on (don't forget the one that is under the rubber piece on the top left side of it), then you should be able to just pull the DD straight out toward you. It isn't always easy to pull out so I screw the clutch bolt back into it and use a vice grip on the bolt to help pull. Once you have the DD out, unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil, then just unscrew the 2 halves of the case with a torx screwdriver and pry apart. Once you have it apart, I pull the gears out and clean them off real good in some solvent, and check the teeth on the gears and see how the bearings all feel and replace anything questionable, then clean the inside of the case out and put all back together with new oil (I just put a little oil on the teeth and inside the bearings during assembly) and some hi-heat silicone sealer to seal the two halves back together (I let it sit overnight to let the silicone dry and then I put the rest of the oil in thru the drain plug), and put it all back on the sled the way you took it off.
