m7 Diamond drive Questions with pictures

Ok it was time to clean the diamond drive.I split the case and cleaned it out with Brake Kleen.Everything looks realy good to me.But then i was looking realy close at the weld around the one gear. It looks like it has a little crack going in the middle of the weld.From what i have read that gear is pressed on then welded.

Do you guys think this is a problem or just put it together and ride it??

Also if i have to change that shaft with the gears on it can i just change that part or do you have to change all the gears?

Thanks Darrell

Its hard to see in the pictures but it looks like there are 2 passes of weld and you are pointing to the outer edges of on of the welds? Is there an actual crack of just porosity in the weld?

To me it looks like its only one weld. I have done a fair amount of welding..... it just looks like there is a crack around the whole way where the gear and shaft are together.The sled has 3500 miles.Ill put more pictures tomorrow

Thanks Darrell:beer;

Thanks again Darrell.:beer;

I pulled the bearing to get a better look at this....

What to do? Does anyone think this is a problem?Do you think it will or can come apart. This crack is so thin. Its hard to see it unless its zoomed in 1000 times.....

Change it?weld it?buy a new one?

Well, it defineately looks like a crack, if it were me I'd replace it. To crack must have some sort of stress to cause it. IMO.

Good eye's on catching that crack. I need to inspect mine more closely. I think I would replace the gears as a set. It's more money, but most gears wear together and mesh as a set after time. Just my thought.

Thanks for the replys guys.That is what i was wondering if they would have to be replaced as a set????? just like when you change the gears out in a diff in a car......

The worst part is the local Cat dealer told me when i went in to get the fluid for the DD.They sayed to buy the bottle of flush and new fluid and im good to go.They said there is no need to take it out and apart to clean it.I would have never found this if i didnt.They probley wouldnt have even seen it even if they split it. Who knows it may have lasted 1000 miles or maybe 2 but i guess better to be found now.

Thanks Darrell:beer;:beer;:beer;
