M1000 mods???

I've asked this ? twice before, but never got a real straight answer, especially from those with experience. I ride an 07 M1000, HPS can, 40/36 helix, BDX rock rollers, powerclaw, lots of venting, had the 08 ecu update done before I bought it, but I haven't had the new update yet, might not at all. I'm going to lighten it up a little more, but would also like a little more power. I'm thinking I'd like to do an airbox and a Y-pipe because I have heard you can run these without a control box. Those who have experience with this setup, or know for sure if it's a good/bad idea please chime in. I don't want to run a controller, because I'm really not into tuning, I just want to pull the cord and go. Would I need to run 91 octane gas? Would I need to change anything else in my clutching? Etc, Etc. Any help would be appreciated.
BTW on a side note, anybody know what the deal is with the E3 spark plugs? Read a little about them in SnoWest and can't really believe the claims they're making, or that 1 plug can replace dozens of diff. NGK's.

I wouldnt beleive too much on the e3 plugs. As far as the mods go, if you want a relible sled with no tunning then id leave it stock. The gains wont be huge any way. If you do any thing id get the y pipe but be sure the check the plugs for a while to make sure your not lean. On some sleds they will still be rich but on some it leans them out quite a bit.

I dont think any recluthing will be nessary if you have it dialed in now. Could try a little heavyer weight if you wanted but not nessary.

It all depends on the elevation inwhich you ride. You can ad an airbox mod and a "Y" pipe, with no control box, if you ride over 9000 feet. If you ride below that, for a decent amount of time, it will det. on you, especially if you put a load on it, like climbing. If you want a good, inexpensive airbox, go with the BDX! It works great. The y-pipe, any one of the 3 will work just fine. Check out Backcountryislife his sled in his sig. line is ran like that, and it works great. I've seen it in person.

Clutching may require a little tweeking, a little more weight or a little heavier spring.

I have a D & D y-pipe that I would sell. Very few miles on it. PM me if interested.

i have an 08 m1000 and had the bdx air box and the y pipe and can with no control box i rode mostly around 5 to 9000 feet but rode around home (2200ft) and never had any problems

had a 07 m1000, d&d y-pipe bmp can and slp m7 intake cone, pulled the plugs at 4000ft and they where way lean. got rid of those mods and added slp full exhaust, huge power gain. 09 m1000 slp y-pipe, slp can, at 5000ft I had to raise the fuel pressure from 44psi to 56psi to keep the egt temps at stock temp readings.

I highly recommend egts with any combination of mods, they are great for tuning and if anything ever goes wrong you know. but if you want to run those mods I would at least install a fuel pressure regulator and pull plugs to check how lean it is and add fuel accordingly. would be a good idea to get a plug reading before installing mods as well. (do you know how to read plugs on a injected sled?) there is a power gain with a y-pipe. bdx is a good intake but you may need a fuel control box to make it run right, I would run the 4" slp my intake cone with the stock intake for those mods.

Great post!. Fuel pressures vary too greatly on these sleds to say " yeah you should be able to do that with no problems". You would have to verify the mods you are doing against the same sled and run the same fuel pressure.
You can call SLP and see what they have to add on this subject.

Is no one running an aftermarket head anymore? I am pretty sure that if you get a head from RKT you shouldn't have to get a controller, but you will need to run 91 octane. I know that on my m7 a head made a difference.

As far as trying to add a substantial amount of power goes i think that in order to do so you will have to add a controller anyways. If you are unsatisfied with the power right now you will have to do something big enough to tell a difference which will probably require the addition of a the controller. Like WyoBoy said, his slp pipe kit made a nice addition on his sled but that requires the controller. Controllers now are getting easier and easier to tune and work with.

Another way to make your sled feel like it has more power, climb higher, and make it more fun to ride is to lighten it up. You already got rid of alot of weight by changing out the can, but there is still some weight to be lost around the sled. Try getting rid of weight that is off the center of the sled to make it feel lighter when throwing it around.

Good posts and thoughts/experience from all, thanks. As far as lightening the sled I've done about all I can so far, short of a mesh hood, new front end, and rear skid. I've shaved all I can here and there, plus I bought some snow eliminators, the new BDX tunnel/bumper conversion kit yesterday, so that should help a little more. I'd love to run the full SLP setup just don't quite have the coin for it right now, especially since it seems the power commander is the new way to go. All in all I'd be in it another grand, so that will probably wait till next year, if I still own it by then. SLP told me they wouldn't suggest running even an air box and can without a controller, just too risky.

get a lightweight hood it really makes a big difference the stock hood is 20lbs and the mesh or lightweight hoods are only a couple lbs i have a 1000 and it really made a difference i may have a line on a carbon fiber hood but its not for sure yet

I put a rkt head and a y pipe and reeds on my 08 1000 and it was a good gain. But we did need a controller. It had a wicked lean bog on the bottom end. If you want any significant power gain you will need more fuel. Why risk a 5000 dollar sled for a 200 dollar tunner.
