This is my first sled. I know what you guys are thinking. A lot of sled for my first. I couldn't go wrong with the price. $3450.

New crate motor by waldrens last year 440miles ago with 2,000 miles
Powder claw
lefty
reverse
new ice scratchers
handlebar riser
seat
polished tunnel
light muffler

Is there a way to lighten it up?
What about suspension set up? I have fox shocks in the rear. I'm familiar with using shock pumps but i'm not sure what psi to go off of. I weigh 145.
Also having issues installing new windshield bag. grommets don't seem to want to go back into place.

From the looks of it you still have your stock intake, that thing is a pig get a BDX intake or one from someone else. Also you could go as far as a lightweight hood (Mountain Fit Hoods makes a good one) and a headlight delete (again Mountain Fit makes a good one with or without lights). Now how much money are you wanting to spend? Because the list can go on...

Hold on a minute, before you go modding that thing you better learn a few things.
The M1000 is great but from what I see so far, if you dont know what your doing that thing is prob going to blown up soon.

Does it have a fuel controller on it?

What pipe is that (slp?) ?

Do you know how to tune a mod sled?

What clutch does it have (3 or 4 post)?

How are the motor mounts?

Need some serious info on it

What elevation do you ride at? It looks like it has a full y-pipe and pipe setup but I don't see a fuel controller.

If its setup is good then I would just ride it for a year and learn all about it and see what it needs from there. If you start the mod game it never ends.

You could look into the float conversion for the rear skid or a complete float skid, that will save a bunch of weight.

That sure looks like a BD box in the foam.
Sled also has fuel pressure gauge. I would imagine it may have an adj. fuel reguator in it.

I had an 07 M1000 as well. Had it down to the weight of a M8 which made it ride way better.

Mods I would do would be check the clutch see if its 4 or 3 post if its 4 post I would replace that.

There is no need for a lightweight hood. Remove the headlights and the hood is pretty light.

I agree with Jeva. Make sure it has a BD box or similar on it and just go ride. Get used to it for a season then start modding it.

at 145 pounds, first year rider with a piped M1000 i would leave it alone. sled will have more than enough power for what you'll need. also i'd want to get it out on the snow first and see if it has any problems and is tuned correctly. you throw a bunch of engine\clutch mods at it and it has problems you won't know if its a previous problem or something you did. i'd get to know the sled first.

Get a set of EGT's on it if it doesn't have them. M1000 mod needs them to know if you are too hot in the midrange at 1/2 throttle and wide open on a long pull.

Check that the motor mounts are good. If they are ripped then replace them with the 2011 m1000 mounts. Slightly stiffer but still flex enough not to break things. Also search the threads here for extra motor mounts. A mag side engine mount like the Linderman setup or the old M7 push brace under the oil bottle (bugger to install) will really help hold things in place.

Looks like you still have the torsion springs in the rear suspension. Set them on the lowest tension setting with the adjuster blocks for your weight. I am not sure about the 07 skid, but my 09 handled much better after I dropped the front suspension mount 3/4" in the tunnel. Mine had another hole in the support bracket inside the tunnel that was not drilled through to the outside.

The fronts appear to be Ryde FX air shocks, not the Fox floats so i am not sure where you will like them for pressure if they are adjustable. I like 80/85 in my front floats on a m1000, but I am also a pretty big guy. Maybe start at 65/70 (higher pressure in the left shock to help compensate for motor weight). If you don't have enough pressure it will feel like it rides smooth, but it will not want to lay over for you very well with the front end being closer to the ground. I have heard a lot of people say that softer front shocks will help the sled tip easier. This does not apply to the M-series in my experience. Don't be afraid to make adjustments and see what you like. But obey the golden rule of tuning: ONLY CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME. Or else you will never know if/how much each change improves/worsens the sled.

Now go have fun and ride the thing!

Thanks for the advice guys. Me being light I just want to be able to try to manhandle it and not feel like the sled is controlling me. I will leave it how it is and pray for snow to test her out.

Also, it was just brought to my attention that I forgot to say I added a BDX anti-stab kit when I dropped the skid down. It's just extra insurance that you don't stab a rail through a track window. The cost of the ant-stab kit was well worth the lighter feeling front end from dropping the skid. I also run the rear skid mount in the upper hole to keep the ski pressure off.

Duzzi with those mods there are some risk factors, some ppl get away with it but some don't. If you would like I could give you number and go over everything so you don't wind up with a blown up sled like I did with my first m1000. Since I have tested many setups and know the m1000 better than most, I highly recommend you get some knowledge, there is a ton of info on this sight about modding a m1000 you might want to look into.

The one thing that is a must do IMO to keep it running with those mods is to get egts (koso dual fast probs) they will save you!! and also let you know what is going on when something isn't right. Most important gauge on a sled !

This.

What alt was the last owner at, what alt are you at? The previous owner might have known where the hot spots are and known how to avoid issues, where you may not. GET AN EGT, NOW, BEFORE YOU RIDE IT... and plan to pull plugs & check a few times for a reference.
