M series clutching-why does it engage with a BANG?

sled2shred aftermarket helix like BD-X are putting the reverse notch in their cams so they can be used on electronic and dd reverse units. And yes these cams make a little more of a clunk because of it. I only notice it when going from forward to reverse and reverse to forward.

This sure seems to be an interesting topic.

The helix notch theory makes sense to me I guess but, there sure is a lot of slop in that Diamond Drive when I rock the secondary clutch back and forth.

Does anyone make a helix specifically for the 09 and newer sleds yet?

Would slightly larger or clutch rollers of a different material help diminish the feeling of the big bang of clutch engagement?

I changed to a BDX 09` style helix on my 07` 1000, and got the banging noise on takeoff. The reverse cut on the helix is the culprit.

On the 09 models the cut in the helix for reverse allows the rollers to " slam " if you run it on a stand you can watch the helix. If you coast to a stop it wont slam but when you stop with the brake it slams the helix into the reverse notch then when you go to take off it has to travel back to the foward side and you get the " Bang " Its a nasty noise i know that !

^^^X2. I have to believe this is the noise we are hearing. I have a hard time believing that changing springs or weights etc. will fix the problem.

1M800, that's pretty cool you have 777 posts. Out here in Washington where Boeing is big, that means something (I'm not sure what, but something).:)

Yes, it sure sounds like the helix is the culprit.

I wonder if one of the aftermarket helixs might have less tendency to bang?

Yeah I was thinking the same thing about the aftermarket helix. It is annoying but I'm not sure that it is actually a "problem" (like we keep calling it) I am just going to leave mine. Good luck!

Well it sounds like I need to change out my helix AGAIN. I have a 36 and a 40/36 for a 09. I will probably be selling cheap. I wonder how the 44/40 will work with the SLP pipe. I rode powder this week and I don't like the start of engagement, it slams and the rpms don't come up until after that.

Mine is a 08 and has the slop as well. The helix with the notch is for the 09 but will work in others apparantly with the CLUNK.

i have an 08 with 09 RKT helix that has the notch, and it never bangs in the secondary. So don't go selling your helix. Also, a 44/40 is not a good helix for Ms that ride the mountains IMHO. You likely won't like it.

didn't catch what sled you're on , but I am running a 44/40 on an '09 M1000 with full slp and BDX intake. Got a chance to try it on a couple of hills this weekend and does pretty good. Pulling 7570 RPM's , 48 mph track speed at 3000-5000' elev. - I have ordered some lower gears too as it needs geared down from stock.

I am thinking it`s the torsional twist from the RKT kit that keeps it from banging???

One more idea on the "hit" as it engages: Make sure that your belt is clean! Seem obvious enough, buy every time I clean it, the next ride out the engagement is butter.

Some primary spring rates, if you're interested.
