M series air intake mods?

What have you guys tried? What did and did not work well? There are lots of options available, it will be good to hear the results. I'm trying to decide which air intake mod to make the most of my speedwerx pipe & y pipe on a otherwise stock 09 M8 Sno Pro. I have a version 1 boondocker box.

Depends were you ride and what conditions you ride.I am a powder Junkie, the dryer and deeper the better.I have a 08 M1000, Speedwerks Y and pipe. In the deep stuff I found 2 cool (Tammys) block off kit works awesome.Add two more vents next to speedo and seal and block off airbox under hood.Cheers Red Dog.

Timbersled intake works good for me, use good venting though and seal up the nose cone. here's a pic, and for others on here thinking about frogskins 1100cat on here the nose vents that actually get riveted on they are way stronger than frogskins i will be changing mine out he also has guage vents which i believe will be a great addition. The timbersled also claims a weight loss of 8 lbs and 2 hp, i also noticed the stock intake was rubbing away plastic in one corner right at box connection (must have been from movement) either that or they had to remove a bit from the factory to get it to fit, anyways if the plastic was wearing it can't be good for it at that spot. all in all the timbersled was a great addition for performance and weight loss.

I have a BDX air intake kit but, I haven't installed it yet.

I am getting the SLP performance edition mods done and getting their air intake first. Once I find out my EGT baseline with the SLP air intake and their preprogrammed Power Commander PCIII, I will put on the BDX airbox and add fuel accordingly.

However, I am reluctant to drill a bunch of holes in my belly pan for the BDX airbox kit. I have read that they work very well but, I'd sure like to see pictures of a belly pan with the BDX air intake kit installed.

I also have read that the Timbersled air intake kit works well.

I can understand the ripping of the vents. I even ripped one of my hood vents that came with the BDX kit (I installed the hood vents but not the entire kit because I had no fuel controller).

I think it's just the nature of the cloth vents and they are pretty cheap to replace through Frogskinz.

What do you have in mind?

you could rivet pet screen on, then put the frogzskins vents on top or bottom? Im not sure if there would be room for rivets though. You could always use a really good adhesive to stick the pet screen on.

I have not been real eager to put in an airbox that requires air intake screens from the belly pan area either. I have been thinking about trying a wider opening intake (like a speedwerx or others), and installing a few round vents in the underside of the stock hood air system far enough forward that it won't get heated air from the engine, thats after I put frog skinz on the various nose vents in the hood etc. That way in deep snow it will pull air from the stock screen areas near the headlights and air through the front nose screens. Hopefully not all of which will get plugged at the same time. Where are you guys getting your frogskinz vent covers?

Melted 06 M7 air box

When i finally broke my windshield off my air box fell down onto the pipe and melted through. The whole hood section of the air box is falling apart. I'm looking at putting on a BDX intake. The nose cone holes seem a little sketchy at best. I'm based out of Mammoth CA, from 7000-12000 ft. We get some real deep and heavy snow. Seams like the mesh could just blow out and fill up with snow. Is it worth messing with or just replace the stock parts?

i use an intake on a 700 based BB, it goes good, but its full trim also. i have read things on this and the old snowwest board about the 700 based cat doesnt like to much messin with the intake unless its pretty modded.
that said in your case i dont think i would replace the stock parts , but i would keep the airbox itself in the nose and figure something out from there. maybe vent right above it in the hood or something creative .. dont make it airtight to the outside though in case you do submarine, it can draw underhood air ,, yes hot air but better than no air. keep it cheap and if it dont work try something else :P

Got a SLP intake on mine. Awsome addition, they have a couple extra vents under the hood so your intake dont clog up with powder. No complaints

Intake

I have a question. Is it worth it to do an intake kit if all I have done is an SLP can and no fuel controller?

the bdx intake confuses me. the front part of my sled can only been for about 4 minutes from the trailer. after that, it's caked in powder. how would that intake design be beneficial???

What are you trying to accomplish?? Are you looking for power or battling clogging in the deep??
For power, stock is best. IMO the BEST route is stock airbox and a mesh hood....so clogging and best power. I tried several and always ended up back at stock.

I've been a dirtbiker for years, and airbox mods have always been a cheap big power gain. So I thought similiar to what you say, stay with the stock system just open up the entrance to the airbox a bit and provide some additional flow with adding two vents into the underside of the plenum.

Just my .02 but my intake made a huge difference not only in weight loss but in throttle response and power as well, the engine felt like it was breathing so much better than stock. If you want to keep the stock plenium slp makes a cheap intake kit that would work better than stock but you don't loose the weight, it all depends if you are going to run a pipe then gutting your hood and venting it well would be the way to go, it gets hot under there and my thoughts are that stock plenium would break down and melt after a while but other guys could probably answer that question better. With it gone though you have a lot more room and a lot better venting, also adding venting to the underside of the plenium would allow more air in but it would be hotter air so i am not to sure it would be that great , just my .02

Are you running any type of filter on the stock air box opening with having the mesh hood on it?
(I'm putting a mesh hood on a 05 M7 and looking for info)

I am running a D&D Firebreather on my M8. Nice clean fit and finish, and a few pounds off the nose of the sled. I had no bogging issues, and am running it with a D&D Y-pipe and can. I also installed a set of side panel vents from 2Cool Air Vents.:beer;

I have been throwing the idea around about making some vents for the airbox. This will alow for more airflow and no more bog from a clogged intake. I still need to test it out and see if it helps or not. If anything just use the stock plenum and use the two vents for the sides for a little extra flow.

looks good snowbound , i was thinking of something like that but i would have left the airhorntube in ,, it has a special shape to is conducive to airflow.. and just covered it with a filter of somekind
