Looking to move to Montana.

Im looking to relocate out to Montana, i was wondering if anybody on here could give me some insite on where i should be pounding in some stakes.
im looking at the eastern to middle part of the state. dont know a whole lot about Montana so any information would be great.

Thanks much.

Montana has been very good to me for the last sixteen years. Even though I don't live there I go there often, in fact I'll be from Utah to Montana and back to Utah one day, tomorrow.
I would imagine your best opportunities would be in Billings.

What kind if work are you looking for? Most of eastern and central mt are small farming based communities. The towns in the west have more office jobs and more industry. You could probably do some oil work in eastern mt but I don't think it's that great of a living peronally

Snowdrifter must be thinking of the more eastern oil field? There's nothing west of miles city or east of billings for work. Unless you have previous mine or heavy gear experience you can work here or roundup

I guess it all depends on what you do for a living, if you are a welder you can work pretty much anywhere. Most anything in the trades are in demand. It's a good place to live just a little more laid back than the rest of the country. Don't expect the pay scale to be the same either.

I am going to work in the oil feilds of Nodak but do not want to live there, i would like to be closer to the mountains for my home base, sick of driving 17 to 20 hrs to ride, the opertunity came up with a job offer up there so i thought its time to start a new chapter in my life and get the hell out of minnesota, home of nothing but high taxes and no snow. Like i said dont know much about Montana just thought it would be a nice place to live.

Don't waste your time there, come to Alaska. Lived in Missoula, whitefish and few other spots and they were nice but no where near the quality of Alaska. My mother in law lives in West Glacier and in fact her family originally developed that area. The people that have moved in are destroying the state with rules and regulations etc. Neighbor called the cops on me for having my dogs off leash on the family's 3 acres. My dogs are both very well trained and are under great voice control. The neighbor felt uncomfortable leaving her house knowing thier were 2 dogs of leash in the area is what she told the cops.

I live in Miles City and we are 2.5 hours away from williston and 4 hours away from the bighorns and about the same from cooke city. Nice peaceful place to live if you ask me.

I would avoid the Missoula and Whitefish areas. Missoula has some nice country around it, but has a very high population of greenies. Whitefish/Kalispell seems to have been hit with an influx of California out of staters (and mostly not the good kind). Too bad too because there is some good riding near both places I'm told.

As said, the south east corner of the state isn't anything special. I currently live in Billings and it is as far east as I really want to go. Plenty of work here, but it is pretty crowded and gets HOT and dry in the summer time (worse than any other place in the state). Prices for things like vehicles and real estate are starting to be driven up by the oil field money to the east. Good dirt biking areas to the south of town and into Wyoming. 3hrs to Cooke City, 2:15 to the Big Horns, 3-3 1/2 to the areas south of Bozeman, 3hrs to the Belts.

I went to college in Bozeman for 4 years before moving to Billings for work and would move back there if I got the chance. 3 sledding locations about 1-1:15 south of Big Sky, 1:45 to West Yellowstone, 2 1/2 to Island Park, 3 hrs to Cooke City, 2 hrs to the Belts, and the Bridger mountains are 20min but the riding is fairly limited there. You will run in to quite a few greenies here too, but the hippie to off road enthusiast ratio seems to be staying tolerable. Only downside is there are no moto tracks left in the area that will let me ride my quads on them :face-icon-small-fro

Lewistown is also worth looking at IMO. Not a lot going on in town for big excitement, but the surrounding country is really nice. Good hunting in the area, ATV, RZR, dirt bike riding. Belts are about the closest sledding, 1-1 1/2 hrs away, areas south of Bozeman are 3 1/2, 4hrs to the Big Horns.

riding areas

FYI, east to west, montana is about a 10-12 hour drive. The eastern part of MT is a long ways from riding areas. Most of the riding is in the south central, south west, west, and north west areas of the state. I would disagree with above on the Whitefish-West glacier area, as we absolutely love it here. There is a ton of great riding, with not a lot of traffic/people. The biggest reason we moved here besides the snow totals/mountains, is the abundance of boating opportunity in the summer. There is a huge number of lakes to boat on, as well as rivers and stream fishing all over. Several other areas we researched are limited on the summer boating opportunities and that was a big thing for us. The dirt biking is unreal, and the cost of living is actually quite reasonable.

dont think that just because you move to montana, you will be close to snow or riding.
