Looking to be a snowmobile dealer what would be the best brand you guys all like

whats your location? depends where you are at. BRP is the way to go. You can get into the best Sleds, the best atv/utv, and the best watercraft on the market.

Got to have a huge bank roll to even be considered by a manufactorer, amazing credit and not be in someone else's territory. Not to mention, location, building, employees including certified mechanics, advertising and oh yeah some idea how to run a dealership.

I would doubt that there is a need there.
Unless I'm wrong, Moritz has Doo, River City has Cat & Vallely has Poo & Yam.
All in Bismarck & Mandan.

I live in Sioux Falls SD, I ride cats, In the last 15 years we have had 5 AC dealers. Polaris has changed 3 times. Doo has been the same. What gets you is the OEM's dumping stock on you. Then having to train your mechanics . I would recommend starting an specialty shop vs trying to get a dealership. Any dealer will tell you they do not make much profit on new machines. Used is where they make money. The other opportunity is set up and maintenance. Most sledder do their own set up and general maintenance because who wants to pay a shop 80 plus an hour for something I can do. Now if it was reasonably price maybe I would use a shop.

Cat tried dumping River City once and they couldn't get anyone else to pick it up so River City sold sleds again. That is the story I have heard. Vallely just has Yam in bismarck, Action sports in Mandan has Pol. Would probably be hard to get Moritz to dump skidoo too as I think they love the atv and jet ski portion. I don't think they sell to many sleds over all though, at least the last time I heard.

I was just back in Bismarck last week and saw an advertisement for planet Powersports in Mandan is the AC dealer now. If you hate money and love headaches- I would open a recreational sports dealership! Seriously- you better do your business plan and have some serious liquid cash before thinking of opening a recreational Powersports shop. Don't want to squash your dreams but it is a tough road. I spent three years of my life in a dealership and it is tough to make money.

Specialty shop / aftermarket performance parts & acc and sell decent used sleds may be a way in if thats really what you want to do ..... money is in the parts & accessories anyway so be a middle man and take a reasonable cut ... don't get greedy, provide top notch service, know your product line well and don't expect to get rich and maybe you'll do ok

Right now i have been mostly working in the boat part of the business and doing pretty well at it. but the way you guys are saying that i would be going in the wrong way on becoming a dealer, so what way should i go with my business?

If you're looking to become a dealer, you want to be the dealer with the brand that sells the most. That tells me you want to become a Can Am / BRP / Skidoo dealer.

You'll have all your bases covered for all seasons and your profit margin will likely be higher with that brand.

Or, I'd become a Polaris dealer for the same reasons as above, or, have the best of both worlds and become both :)
