IMO every semi-aggressive and up rider should probably wear some sort of chest protection. I wear a TekVest and it has saved my ribs twice for sure. Very cheap insurance. You do have to change how you dress though as the vests trap a lot of heat. I've found I go with lighter and fewer layers and still remain comfortable.

Hey guys,
I wear my MX style vest, it is a little bulky and my backpack straps seam to rub on my neck, butt it's better than the pain I felt when I flew up and landed chest first on the back of my tunnel without it on, 4 months of ouch.

I bought a TekVest (Race Lite) in May 2002. And then in July that year I hit a haybale at 85mph. I almost broke my neck and died right there in that alfalpha stubble on a hot 105° day.
The E.R. Doc said (I was told this because I can't remember about 5 hours of that day) that this vest saved me from possible DANGEROUS internal injuries.

I have never ridden without it since.

A MX style roost guard would never have given me any protection like that.

I don't race or jump big but I have smacked my sternum enough times to want some protection. TekVest makes a world class product but $400?? For a mesh and milk-bottle plastic vest??? Uh, no.

Went to my local Play-it-Again Sports and picked up a used, men's hockey chest protector/shoulder pads. I cut the plastic cap off the shoulders and added a hard-plate to the chest I fabbed out of an old cafeteria tray.

I paid $27 for the hockey pads (I had to wash them) and the tray was a dumpster dive. Works great.

Just did the full dress test, bibs, chest protector (under coat), coat, and back pack. It's a different feel, not to bad though. Just have to test it out this winter and see how it feels.

I tried wearing my mx chest protector with a backpack and didn't work for me. Seems like a lot of other people had better success. Maybe mine wasn't fitted very good?

It would always ride up on me, or twist, and the shoulder pads wouldn't stay under the back pack straps after riding.

I have a Bwear vest, similar to tekvest. I don't think they are made anymore? They were from Canada, I believe.

I guess the big thing is where something! Rib injuries really hurt!
