looking for info on beartooth area

Im looking for info on the Iron Mountain area south of big timber as i am trying to help a friend do a recovery mission.

They went in off of west bridger road and rode down to the deer creek cabin area only to drop the sled into the creek and freeze up the track. They were inexperienced and got the sled out of the creek however could not get the track unfroze. Therefore they left the sled and hiked the 8+ miles out.

I went back with 1 of the guys yesterday riding 2 up to get in there, however the snow had all been blown into the creekbeds and was unpassable with a passenger.

After looking into it, i have found info on going down Lower Deer Creek road to iron mountain as a possible second way in.

Anyone have any info in this area? It's very low on snow except in the creekbeds and all the down timber from the fire makes it hard to get through.

Something doesn't add up with their story... were they riding two-up? What happened to the second sled? i would have tried a lot harder on a running sled before I walked EIGHT miles through backcountry.

How far in there is it? You can also get into Iron Mountain through Nye, that may get you closer and be easier access depending on where exactly it is at, you can actually go from Nye and come out in the East Boulder. That area is pretty tough this time of year it might be better to wait until the snow melts and go in on 4 wheelers. It has been several years since I have done much running around that area but my family all lives there and I could ask them specifics if you need, I know several of them are pretty familiar with that area.

Manage to get it out?

That's tough going in there.

I ride that area on dirt bike and the downfall can be brutal. I have never been to the Deer Creek Cabin and tried to ride south but I've been told its tough on a dirt bike.

Be sure to bring a chainsaw!

You can drive in quite a ways on the lower deer creek road but there may be heavy drifting on the roads. Bring tire chains and a come along.

Depending which side your closest to, its a pretty easy dirt bike ride from the Myers Creek cabin on the Nye side to the Lower Deer junction.

Its also an easy dirt bike to the junction from the Lower Deer Creek Rd. Its not on the map but there is a new single track connection the forest service put in at the end of the lower deer creek road to connect to the single track by the old Wepler cabin.

I personally have never been in from West Bridger.
