looking at 2 different machines. an 05 RT 1000, and an 06 RT 1000, both 162's. the 05 only has about 800 miles on it. the guy who owned it weighed in at about 130 lbs, soaking wet. traded it off on a quad! the guy is a good rider, just too much machine for him. the other option i'm looking at is an 06 RT 1000, with about 2400 miles--also has e-start. both are in very good shape. the updates have been done to both units, as far as i know. any things that i should look for in either one? which is a better machine, especially for dependability? right now i have an 05 159 800 and it is an awesome sled for me. runs great with very little work, other than regular maintenance!! i'm 270 lbs, so i think the 1000 will be a better machine for me. we ride the mountains around revy and golden, so i know the 1000 will get me to where some of my buddies can only think of going!!!!!!! just looking for any good imput on either of those machines before i get rid of my 800.

good luck

I am not a brand basher, I will leave that to others. From what I have seen on some previous threads you might want to rethink a 1000. I am pretty sure ski doo doesn't make them any more for good reason. I know a guy who had one and the engine blew on it after about 500 miles. Who knows, I am sure there are people out there that have had some luck with theirs. I do know that they are heavy. Most of what I have seen on snowest is pretty negative. good luck.

My riding buddy and I bought brand new 05's in april of 06 we rode until June that year and all of the next with no problems. They have a lot of raw power, torque, they are heavy but they have the power to pull the weight.

I have an '05 1000 and have loved it. There are a few differences between the '05 and '06 but they are pretty close. I would lean more towards the one with fewer miles but that's just me. Get rid of the rear heat exchanger, do some clutching, aftermarket can or pipes and you'll have a great machine. After riding my 1000 I wouldn't ever own another 800. They are heavier than the 800's but the power more than makes up for it. Hope this helps.

The only RT1000 I've been around is a real runner. It's an '05 162". I rode it a few times. I loved the way it rode and handled the bumps, and it ran like a raped ape. It was HEAVY though. When I stuck that thing, me and another big guy had all we wanted picking up the back end. It also needed a lot of time at the dealership for updates. It still doesn't seem to be quite right. Throttle response is as crisp as I've ever seen in a big twin, but there's still black soot all over the right side panel.

I suppose if it was me, I'd buy it and also invest in a hi-jacker so I could get the heavy SOB out by myself.

my buddy has an 05 with 600 miles on it. he just had the engine rebuilt by a ski doo mechanic who told him that out of all the sleds that doo came out with, the rt 1000 was their biggest mistake due to the engine and the weight of the machine. he heard this from other mechanics as well.
don't shoot the messanger, i'm just telling you what he told me.
but if you really want one badly, he's asking 7000.00 canadian.lol.

Junk

I have a friend that has one he wants to sell, There junk from what i;ve seen. if they were all that theyd be all over.

Aweful lot of opinions from those who do not own a RT1000's for sure.

I have a 05 RT1000 162 since new. It has been a great machine with minimal maint. There have been a few issues, but nothing that Doo did not handle. The 05's created a BAD name for the 1000 for sure--they were either a good machine or a bad (way bad) machine. Mostly ghosts which they could not figure out (computer and mapping issues). A quick ride on either machine and you should know which it is--if it has arm pulling power--you got a gooder--if not--run. If you are the size you say you are--No problem riding this Heavy sled(weighs the same as a 96 670 summit) with a TON more power. You can PM Papa Bear and ask him what he thinks of his 06 as he is a bigger guy as well. I am right around the 200lb mark and can throw it around with some work.
After getting it--find someone who can clutch it for you or has the right combo (star valley ski-doo in Wy.) and it will become a real arm puller.
All I have done to mine is a "thing" can, a intake race doo kit, clutching and put in a bunch of venting.

As far as comparing to a 1000AC--That is chassis preference and then finding the tricks to make it run as well--Big air intake--pipe and clutching on those make a huge difference.

Good Luck on your decision--I would also go with the lower mileage sled.

PS--You will see the 1000 out in 2010 with DI and a good computer MAP.

I Love Mine Also

It seems everyone that hates the weight of the machine is usually a 180 lbs. or less that are the critic. If your fat like me or should I say ( big boned ).
I am around 6'5" and 295 and it drags my azz up and down all day long with ease. I have had to remap it twice with updated programs from skidoo, no biggy. I put an HPS can to replace the 22 lb. suitcase of a muffler.

You will have no problem throwing that sled around like a rental being big boned yourself, lol.

I would choose the 05 just for less mileage then the 06

Good luck to you

I am very happy with my 05.5. I bought it this year with about 550mi and now have another 100 on top of that. Overall like others have said it is heavy but only when goin slow. I am 185 and handle it just fine. If I were you I would take the 05 since it has hardly been ridden and just make sure it has the updates and remove the rear cooler and stock can.
