Looking at an '01 Duramax, have a couple of questions

It is on a lot, 88000 miles, extra cab, short box, stock.

What kind of mileage can I expect empty/towing? Any gremlins? What is a fair price? They had it at $18000 and have it marked at $15999. That sounds a bit high to me for an '01 but I haven't done much research on diesels. Thanks!

I used to have an 02 and an 04, they both had the same motor as the one your looking at. I had a hypertech in both of them set on stage 3, which I think is like 90 horse or so and I would usually get anywhere from 16-19 depending on driving conditions and never had a problem with either of them. When I would tow a car trailer I would usually get 10-12 when driving on interstate at 75+ and I did get around 13-15 driving 65ish.
The 01-04 LB7's had injector problems that were warranteed for 7 years or 200,000 miles, so an 01 would not qualify for that. With 88,000 miles and being an 01, that is not a lot of miles, but for $15,999, that might be on the high side I would say, especially if it could have a chance with injector problems and you could be spending more money later down the road. Not saying it will happen, but most of them did.
If it were me, I would maybe look for an 03 or 04, that way you still have a warranty on injectors in case something does happen. You should be able to find a nice 03 or 04 for around that 16k-20k range with about the same or maybe a little more miles.
Hope this helps.

the '01 year is rumoured to have had problems with head gaskets as well.the LB7 engine seems to be fairly reliable- as long as you aren't running around with your programmer on #10 and draggin 12000# trailers...lol.

i have an 01 crew sb gmc with 190k currently, only thing i have had to change is 2 sets of injectors under warranty, a transfer case that my hands ran out of oil:mad:, a set of brakes and water pump

Injectors were the only problem we saw on our 01....they went at about 150k if i remember right. Edge EZ works really really well in LB7 motors. 01 got by far the best milage of any we ever had. The 05's have been worst on milage. We also have a few problems with some allison transmision sensors that shorted out when hit with mud, water, snow, ect. I think there was an update that came out for that though, chances are it's been replaced...might be worth looking into though. Good luck!

P.S. 15 to 16k sounds about right to me if it's fairly loaded with options.

sounds a bit steep to me, i would think 9k-11k sounds more right, granted it does only have 88,000 miles.

LB7 was best motor, once all problems were fixed, only heard if head gasket and injector problems. an edge juice with attitude works great on them for economy and power

Thanks guys. They tell me the injectors were done under warranty, hadn't heard about the head gasket problems. I think I'm going to offer them $10000 and my '96 Suburban with 211000 miles. Probably get laughed out of the place but oh well.

It's not "if", but "when" as far as the injectors go. Get the vin# and PM me and I will be able to tell you what has been done under warranty. The head gasket issue affects every DMax into '07. There is a new design head gasket for LB7 on up. In my experience the issue is way more prevalent in areas with high temperatures and trucks that are pulling near their max limit. I moved from SE Washington to NE Montana and haven't seen a single failure in the three months I've been here, and I've only heard of a few previously. I used to do around a pair a month in Washington.

gaskets

the head gaskets are not comon only if you got it turned up and dont watch your gauges. got an 01 with 224,000 miles making 600 rwhp on stock bottom end and drive daily :D

600 hoss-power sweeet !

just curious what programmer etc. you're using + if you do any serious towing?thought about getting the whole banks kit w/exhaust brake cause i have a 11000 lb trailer to haul and no real time for experimenting with what will work together(or not...$$$!)

i agree the price sounds a bit steep for the way the market is right now. my buddy picked up an 04 d-max with around 100k on it about a month ago for $14k.

Ya, too much $. Maybe $14k tops if it's in perfect shape.
I managed to get $17.5k for my '02 Crew Cab DMax last summer with 92k mi, but it was in perfect condition, crew cab, and had a yr of injector warranty left......took me 4 months to sell it though!
If you're looking for an '01, look on Wyoming craigslist. Guy has a black '01 EC/LB, over 200k mi, but new engine, new built trans, and a ton of other stuff replaced, lots of extras, asking $10k. If the truck's in as nice of shape as it looks, it's a deal.

02

I've got a late '02. 16-17 mpg constant on the highway. 12mpg with total 15K weight.

New injectors 2 months ago with 120K. Head gaskets were done 2 yrs ago.

I run an Edge chip. Love the Allison trans

duramax

Stay away from anything older than '05. The engines have problems. I work at a GMC dealership and we see problems with most that are chipped. You will gain MPG and major hp but you will have premature problems(guaranteed). Something to think about.
