LONG LIVE THE 2 STROKE!!! Doo does it again!!

They need to use that technology in an 800 or 1000! That is what most folks where I ride use. 600s are very rare around here!

Didnt see where it said the power it was putting out? Is it close to the other 600 class sleds?

Very interesting........

Kind of a cool summerization feature........

I like the one pull thing...........

I like the low fuel consumption thing.........

I like the low oil consumption thing.............

Now, make sure you build the motor right so we have pistons that last!!

It's good that they prolonging the life of a two stroke but at what price? I don't like the idea of using less oil maybe the rod bearing will only make it 1000km's and you're rings and cylinder walls won't last with minimal oil.

E-Tec = Bombardier = OMC = Ficht = one of the main reasons OMC went bankrupt.

- and the nickname Poptimax comes to mind for certain Merc. DFI 2 stroke engines..... before they got it right.

I hope BRP has all their testing done.

I have an E-tec 60HP outboard and it gets better mileage than a Merc 60 Big Foot 4 stroke, weighs about 50# less, and has better low end and is quiet.
3 year warranty.

The E-tec has proved itself up to 5,600 rpm. I wonder how they solved the 8,000 rpm needed for the snowmobile application?

.....this is the biiiiiiggggg question.

.

WRONG - the reason OMC went out of business is not because of the FICHT/ETEC technology. The reason OMC went out of business is because they farmed out much of the manufacturing and did not impose quality control on its vendors. Parts were out of spec. When the motors were put together with out of spec parts - predictable results occurred.

Bombardier got a bargain for US$60 million. The first thing Bombi did is take a micrometer to the parts bins in the OMC factory and threw out over $1 million dollars of inventory - out of spec. Bombi imposed quality control on the vendors. Build parts within spec or they will not be accepted. Bombi marketing had to change the Ficht name because it had a bad track record with the buyers. "E-TEC" was coined. Same technology (with annual updates)

The majority of the snowmobile business is the 600cc market in the midwest. This will help keep the EPA required averages in check so that the west coast folks can still enjoy the bigger (dirtier) engines.

This has been a long time coming......and a good thing.

I am a little disappointed that it only has the horsepower of the SDI. I guess I'll just have to wait until the full release to see the new 600R motor...

Now you made me look up the old facts -

.......And just which engines were these out of spec parts being used on ..... maybe the ones that pushed their cost of sales through the roof. I have heard that 10,000+ Ficht powerheads needed repair or replacement. The million dollar in out of spec. parts you refer to is not even a drop in the bucket compared to the warranty labour $$$ they paid out to their dealers --- and they upped the warranty from 2 years to 4 years on these repaired engines!!
- then there was that US Coast Guard directive (I think this is the term) that Ficht engines not be sold until a fire hazard had been repaired. The liability risk that this bulletin caused really hurt the company's value down the road because 'risk of injury or death' was used by the Coast Guard.
- then there was 2001 and the rec. market turned downwards and there was no way they could survive.... they were out of money.

btw. - Pense made an offer to shareholders to buy the company in 99 - $340M. It is estimated that BRP got them for $150M in 2001 or 2002 (whenever it was).

This technology is long over due in this industry.

I own a 2000 ficht 115hp outboard--has been the most awesome outboard I have owned in 35 years!! It is almost totally smokeless and is a fuel miser with gobs of power!! Has been a bulletproof motor.

The problems that OMC had with these engines had nothing to do with the injection system--it was the block design and fuel mapping on the 150 thru 200hp models---they ran lean in the mid rpm range and had meltdowns.

Penske made several bids to buy this company just for the Ficht system--I would think there was not to much wrong with it if Penske wanted to buy it. He also made a bid for it in bankruptcy but it was awarded to the current owners.

This would be a awesome system for sleds--throttle response is unreal with this sytem as well.

Summit Z 1000cc E-TEC in the XP......I think I would have to re-consider my turbo dreams.

That's what I said this morning when I pulled it off the website.

Polaris and Arctic Cat

in 2000, Polaris and Arctic Cat both sign a licensing agreement with OMC for the Fitch system. Obviously when BRP bought them out they went with there own designs

You are correct--Ficht injection system in this design in 2000 will not run over 6000 rpm dependably. But Penske seemed to think he could change them to work for his race cars--that is why he was trying to buy them.

The E-tec injector is a new redesigned unit based off of the ficht.

OMC was in trouble long before the Ficht era. They were hoping that it would be their savior but it was too little too late. the E-tecs have proven themselves to be a very good performing outboard despite some bugs here and there.

I think that BRP is deffinately on to something with this and I hope that they get it perfected and expand it's application to more of their products. If they can do that and get a belt to last in an XP (get the clutching to work right and not be clack magic to tune) and keep the motors from blowing up all the time they might earn me as a customer.

But then again if poo or Cat could make that happen I'd go there too.
