Log Splitters????

Looking to get a log splitter and was looking for some feedback.

I only burn pine.

Do any of you guys have any experience with Northern Equipment's Power Horse 13 ton ($800).....or 20 ton units ($1,000).

The reviews don't offer a lot of detail on capacity but I think I'd be OK with the 13 ton,..... as it looks like these guys were/are cutting a lot of hardwood. However, several of my pine logs are larger than the 13 ton's specs of 12" log diameter.

Thanks in advance.

If you are only burning lodgepole pine, this should work fine as you don't need much of a splitting head. However, I would not use it for anthing too big or tough like yellow pine, cottonwood or fir.

if you have a old tractor that runs hydrolics and has a 3 point hitch find one that will go on the back. at my old job we had one on a old massy. we could spilt fresh cut popular and have it almost stall the tractor but it would snap it no matter the size.

get kids....that's what my parents did. Then somehow they decided to heat with a gas furnace my senior year in high school:confused:

Are you only burning pine due to availability?

Doesn't take much to split pine. We have just a $700 one that we bought from a rental place. We split oak, ash, and elm with it. Ours is similar in size to the one you're looking at. It splits more than 12" wood. More like 18-20". Pine splits with less effort too.

that Bobcat video is AMAZING!!

I used my buddy's 22 ton that splits vertical or horizontal, and was impressed; some HUGE larch only killed the engine once or twice. The vertical option worked good because they were 30" plus semi green larch, and one guy would have a tough time lifting them into the cradle, but no problem standing them on end on the ground.

either way they smoke a maul:D

Thanks Guys. I'm going to head over to Salida, CO and pick up a Speeco from Murdocks. Decided on 22 ton.

I did a few other posts and it seems like the 22 ton won't break a sweat with pine, so it should last as long as my back does.

Got my mother the small electric one from harbor freight. splits good, started leaking oil after tons of splits. still have'nt looked to see were its leaking from

I hate to advocate Walmart but I bought one of there 5-600 log splitters and it sits outside all the time...fire it up every couple months and split some wood. Heck I have even got vice grips holding the spark plug wire onto the cap (mice) and it always works flawless.***It is 6 years old now***
