Lock and Ride Handguards

Has anyone tried the new lock and ride handguards? I'm curious if they've been working good and not breaking. Anyone have any pics?

L&R HANDGUARDS

I posted the same question a while back & got no responses. I guess they have been on backorder for quite a while.
I did pickup a set for the Pro Taper bars & was expecting them to be plastic, but was surprised to see they are die cast metal mounts.
Fairly straightforward installing them however the new style hand guard is another story.
The guard has a molded recess to capture the M5 locknuts, but when tightening fasteners the nut spins in the slot & no way to get a wrench or socket on the nut. The dealer has yet to install a set, so no help from them so far. I have yet to try, but I think if I wedged a single edge razor blade along side of the nuts, it may be enough to keep them from spinning.
All said & done, I have yet to ride with them, but I think they should work fine & If you want to pop them off for any reason, it can be done without tools in 10 seconds.I'm waiting on a set for the straight bars but clamp part is the same as the Pro taper, just doesn't have the 90 degree angle part & includes a smaller straight piece that attaches clamp to the guard.
I have the older style mounts & guards on my 09 Assault & they worked OK too, but they would come loose once in a while due to the guard was mounted with a single screw. A dab of red Loctite took care of that.
Hope this helps.

Couldn't you just run the bolt so that the allen head was in the slot instead of the nut, allowing you to put a socket on the nut?

No. Tried that. The bolt is too long to fit if you turn it around. Hits on the plastic guard. Take a look at the photos of the handguard. The guards didn't come with any mounting instructions at all & I bought 2 sets. I'm pretty sure I'll figure it out. I think my idea with the razor blade should work.
Thanks

well unfortunitely it wont. what i did to make it work was take the bolt out and run it through the locknut several times. i know that you are not supposed to do that but it was the only way that i could get it to tighten. then i put the inside bolt on and tightened it down. it tightened up pretty good but to get that last little bit i used a pair of dykes to hold the nut and tightened it. that seemed to work really well.

I ran the locknut on the lower bolt in backwards. That gave me just enough nut left to get an open end wrench on. I put a washer under the upper nut so that I would have enough nut left to get ahold of on that one. They didn't install worth a damn on the regular RMK handlebars as the mounts don't quite tilt the right way. The handguards are tilted up too far and I can't adjust them any more. As for the cast lock n ride clamp that goes on the handlebars, in order to get them tight enough so they wouldn't flop around on the bars I broke one of them. Pretty crappy mount design all in all. I will build my own mounts.

By the way, same observation for Burandt Backcountry bag (crappy mount design)- poor installation instructions, doesn't mount on the sled very easily, stripped one of the bolts putting it together. The plastic portion of the lock n ride clamp isn't going to take very many times taking it on and off the sled before it spins out just like the nut holder on the handguards. I will probably ultimately abandon the lock n ride feature and bolt the bag down permanently.

Exact same issue with my regular rmk bars. Broke one of the die cast mounts trying to tighten it and the guards don't seem like they'll block your hands from wind completely.

Still trying to figure out a better mounting system.

Yeah I just need to find some time to spend in the shop to make my own. I love the lock n ride feature because I can see popping them off to roll the sled over when you're stuck so I want to keep that but I am going to have to add the ability to swivel up/down somehow. It sure doesn't look like they will block the wind at the current angle.

I'll know tomorrow since we are FINALLY getting some snow ! Yee haw!

Seems kinda silly to spend hours in the shop 'fixing' such a small item -

I ended up having to wedge a pair of needle nose pliers in there to hold the locknuts. What a POS design. Then to top it off, the cover put some pressure on the one guard so badly on my 1 hr trailer ride, that it was bent down to the point it wasn't covering my hand. So like a diptard, I went to gently pry it back up into position and snapped the small plastic bracket from the mount into the guard itself.
Needless to say I called the dealer from the hill to find me a set of last years style guards, never had an issue there. The new guards seem to be mounted too far forward from the bar end, not sure how effective they would be anyways in the cold??

sleds

we sold alot of the new handguards already and they work awesome. just have to be careful when putting together, we hit trees and rolled the sleds over when we were out and didnt break any, very happy with them
