Local Route Info Needed

Driving from NW Iowa(Sioux City) to Las Vegas. My fastest route is 80 to 70 thru Denver etc. My issue is I can't leave till Christmas morning so it would put me in Denver Christmas night and heading West on 70 first thing Saturday(26th) morning.

I've read on here multiple times about ski traffic. I imagine it will be terrible the morning of the 26th heading west. My question is: how terrible?

My southern alternative route is +150mi and 3.5 hrs per Google.

Headed to a bowl game in Cali and have to be in Vegas noon Sunday or I would not be so concerned.

Sorry not snowmobile related, but thanks for any info.

Just leave Denver before 5:30 am and you will be fine. Anything after 6-6:15 adds two hours to vail. At least for me.

Sounds accurate, +2 hrs or so. I would be getting up really early to bug out. Once past Vail the traffic will really die off and past Glenwood there will be almost nobody on the road. It is just getting out of town that is the problem, and you are right to assume most of the Denver metro area will be trying to get up that hill Saturday morning LOL

I'd go ahead and spend the night in Dillon or Frisco, instead of Denver. Then you'd just ha

ve to get over Vail Pass, and easy sailing after that.

Plus waking up in the mountains is about a gazillion times better for your soul, than waking up in a city and dealing with traffic.

99.9% of the time, I'd say stay away from 70, but looks like as long as it's not puking it's worth the gamble to go that way.

80 might beat 70 in bad weather, but going south could be a gamble also. Wouldn't be scared of HWY 50, but don't have much faith in New Mexico keeping the roads open in a storm.

Thanks for the info.

Hotels in Dillon and Frisco are a little higher than I'm used to for Christmas night. Goal is to keep rolling to Grand Junction and save a bill.

Final question: We'll hit Denver at 4pm on the 24th and keep heading West on 70. Is that traffic gonna be just as bad as the Christmas morning I'm trying to dodge?
