Lizard head pass telluride

Was thinking of doing some riding up towards Telluride, anyone ever ride Lizard Head pass?Telluride is a cool town, and would like to take some friends there. But there has to be some good sledding.Usually go to the Boat, just want some change of atmosphere.

I just moved to Cortez , I have been taking my jeep up around Telluride looking for places to ride, and I thought to myself how good Lizrard Head would be to ride also, just one big problem, it is designated wilderness, so I am pretty sure it is off limits. I have heard just down the road you can ride Dunton and Rico which are both pretty close. I also heard there is a lot of good riding over towards Durango, Molas pass and that whole area. I hope I am wrong about Lizard head pass, but I looked it up on line and it is considered wilderness.

I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago that said he rode Lizard Head. Also in the area are Ophir Pass and Red Mtn Pass. There are some spots around Silverton also. I'm sure there are other areas too.

Ophir is know for producing some of the best avalanches in the state. Big ones, run forever.....................

Some BIG Avy shoots around Ophir, I wondered myself if riding is allowed around here. Not much wilderness just a lot of mining areas.

We have been in the San Juans a fair amount and you do not want to be ANYWHERE near the avy zones when it is even moderate slide time. The slides in these area are so big it is hard to describe. The first few we saw were incredible. Not the type of slides where your ABS pack will save you.

WOW,those vids were unbelievable, some really good footage.I guess if i want to ride that area Extra precaution is an order. So that was all from Ophir pass?Just want to find some good, cautionary places to ride that way.But we are all backcountry enthusiasts, with adequate experience.

Lizard Head is a really good place to ride. Barlow Creek is just down the road and is one of my favorite places to ride just got to really watch the avys. Some of the most beautiful views around.

NOt sure about Lizard Head, I've never seen tracks in there. The whole Telluride area is anti-sledding, imo.

But Ophir, Red MTn and Silverthorne are pretty good. Some of the deepest and steepest in the state. Regarding Ophir, i've ridin in there alone and its creepy. I pretty sure its ok to unload at the elect substation on west side of the road. And head west towards Ophir pass. but it travels thru the a gulch that if it slides, your dead..... Once again, i never see anyone riding in there, but its been done by me and others. Contact the Silverton sled club for exact info, and pls be careful.

Molas looks way cool, stairstep terrain. South of Molas get very little snow as you head to Durango. Enjoy
