Little South Fork Snow Conditions.

Weisspow and AcmtnCat decided to dig a pit today to see for ourselves the conditions of the Western Uintas.

This was an East facing 30 to 33 degree slope, at 9500ft.

It was a solid 35" to 40" strong slab sitting on top of old rotting snow, if one breaks
loose right now it will slide all the way to dirt.....

Not a traditional test. cut a 4 foot wide block out and as you can see in the pic's had aaron jump down on the shovels.
The whole block slide right away.
Once we did that we should have isolated a smaller column, but we didn't.
Just went with what we saw from the large block.

Looks more like depth hoar / sugar snow. Either way...not good.

I was supervising.

It only took them a few minutes to dig the pit and isolate the column.

It only takes a few minutes and is something we should all do more often. Something I am very guilty of not doing. You can learn a lot about the snow pack from a simple pit and the snow pack can be very different just a few miles apart.

hers a pic from Fairview last week, the bottom layer -- bout an inch thick seemed to be more ice than sugar..........not sure if thats good or bad ??
