Light weight battery in new Pro

Has anyone installed a light weight gel battery in there new pro with easy start?I snowchecked mine with ES but would like to ditch the heavy lead acid battery.Pls let me know if you have modded your battery

Savage, I havent done mine yet(long story but on my 11 the start kits were on back order till december last season..when it came in I dropped the sled off for a week but had to have it back for a ride..well dealer didnt get a chance to get it put on..so I took the sled..never took it back..lol, but I did some checking..a lithium battery for it(stock replacement type) was right on 2 bills..but weighed less then 2 pds..so thats what I plan on putting in mine...

will see if I can find the site again..supposed to be the chit for a battery..locally we can get gel replacments for about 130..they are slightly lighter..but better amperage..will see if I can find the site again....

Battery weight has always been an issue. Nice to see that there are some light(er) weight options becoming available.

Lithium Ion sled batteries

Does anyone have experiance with the light weight batteries for the electric start models? I snow checked a 800ES for my wife, and two bills to drop 10 lbs seems a bargain.

Does anyone have any cold weather experience, good or bad with Lithium batteries?

Those shoraipower batteries are super light, my local dealer had some for sale and I was checking them out. They have alot of cranking amps for such a small lightweight battery. They had multiple sizes in stock, some for fourwheelers some for harleys etc. I was checking them all out, I would definately have one if I was running electric start. The one that would be used in a snowmobile was around 2 pounds if my memory serves me correctly

I have done a little research on this for the Pro. I like the Ballistic Performance Lithium Iron battery. BTW, not that it really matters and it is just a detail but these are lithium IRON batteries not Lithium Ion. Trying to decide on the size now. There is a 12 cell and a 16 cell I believe. Need to do some measuring. Also, you can mount these batteries any way you want, upside down or sideways is fine. Guys are using these on big Harley motors so they should spin a sled motor just fine. Be nice to pay a little less weight penalty for e start.

I just recieved my Ballistic evo2 battery and yes they are small and light weight. Im going to use it to run a fan on my Pro.Call the guy up and talk to him I think you would need the 16cell one. The only problem is they dont like the cold you need to remove them and store them in a warm place when not using it.

Correct, these batteries do not like the cold, and they are picky about being charged correctly. Also, they don't like to sit any length of time between charges.

20 bucks a pound isn't bad, but the extra work/maintenance/risk, I passed. My Wife loves her ES, and didn't complain one bit last year abou the 10lbs.

I'll second the Yammi WR 450 battery, run it on my wifes D7 instead of the insane heavy stocker, always works great zero issues 3 seasons

That's not correct according to the instructions sent with the shorai battery.

They perform best at 32 degrees F and hold a charge for much longer than a lead acid battery. But yes, you should put them on "store" mode for the summer months. Other than that, you're fine.

Not exactly. Litho batts work differently in cold as they get more powerful as they are cranked(generate heat). They store way longer, something like 1% loss/month vs 10-12% a month. Just cant let them get below 20% or you lose capacity. So because of that you have to be sure not to use a charger that has a "restore" mode.

Correct, they work well at 32, they like to be cycled or 'worked' meaning charge/discharge, however, when you look at the charging cycle of the battery sitting in your sled all day, it undergoes a variety of input cycles. Also, the slow discharge rate is directly attributed to the decreased ability of the Lith (Iron phosphate) battery to output energy. In other words, side by side equal sized batterys, the Lit/Iron battery will be somewhere between 20 and 25 percent less "powerful" (by size) than a comparable Lit Ion battery, or a lead acid.
These are the battery's leading the way in alternatively powered vehicles, so they are designed to produce less 'starting' voltage, and have a longer dischage cycle.
I have decided to wait and see what is available in a year or two when I need to replace D's ES battery due to reliability issues due to age. I'm confidant that by then, we will have a battery that is not only lighter in weight and more reliable, but stronger and realtively maintenance free.
I am constantly amazed at technology and can not wait to see what the future brings!! We currently have the ability to make energy cheaply, we just need this, a reliable cost effective way to store that energy.
Won't it be cool when we can eliminate the stator/charging system on a sled and maintain the batterys charge by harnessing the energy in the braking system and the rotational energy of the track spinning?
Great thread!
