Legless man: Cops tasered me just to be ‘downright nasty’

David Edwards and Daniel Tencer
Raw Story
Tuesday, Sept 22nd, 2009
A wheelchair-bound, legless man in Merced, California, says police officers tasered him twice, pushed him out of his wheelchair and left him handcuffed in broad daylight naked from the waist down before arresting him on charges that would never be pressed.
According to the Merced Sun-Star, the Merced Police Department is now investigating two officers who responded to a domestic disturbance call that resulted in 40-year-old Gregory Williams spending six days in jail without charges.
Several witnesses back up Williams’ claims, the newspaper reports. The paper obtained a short, grainy video that appears to show Williams, naked from the waist down, sitting handcuffed outside his apartment complex.
The Sun-Star writes:
[A]lthough the two lead arresting officers are white, and Williams is black, it remains unknown whether race was a factor in the incident. Those two officers remain on duty.
Williams said the officers never used any racial epithets toward him. Although he does believe race and class played a role in his arrest, he also feels the police just wanted to be “downright nasty” to him. “They did what they did because they can get away with it,” he said. “They’ve been doing it so long, it doesn’t matter who they do it to. They just think they can get away with it.”
The incident began when police responded to a call claiming an argument had broken out at Williams’ home. One of the officers involved, John Pinnegar, claims Williams’ wife said Williams had hit her, a charge Williams denies. Police say when they tried to take his two-year-old daughter from his lap to hand her over to Child Protective Services, Williams resisted. That’s when the violence allegedly began.
In an emotional video interview, Williams said: “I’m not a violent person, I do not have a criminal background.”
Added Williams: “How much resisting am I going to do with no legs, no feet? How much resisting am I going to do?”
“Williams said Pinnegar unholstered his Taser, jammed it into his rib cage and shocked him twice. Williams said he fell from his chair onto his stomach on the ground outside his doorway,” the Sun-Star reports.
Williams also says an officer put his knee on Williams’ neck after he was already on the ground, even though “I can’t get up now — I don’t have any feet to get up with,” Williams said.
He added: “And they tell me that I’m doing stupid stuff in front of my kids? These are cops and they come in my house — what if they had accidentally tased my kid because of their [stupidity]?”
The Sun-Star reports that a “hostile” crowd gathered around the apartment building during the incident. The “apartment complex came to a roar because they were tasing a guy in a wheelchair and it was for no reason,” said one witness interviewed on video.
Williams was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and resisting arrest. He spent six days in lock-up before he was released, and the county prosecutor has laid no charges.
Williams has been a double amputee since 2004, when he was diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis that led to gangrene in his legs.
This video is from Merced Sun-Star, broadcast Sept. 20, 2009.

I read this online yesterday...and in my opinion I can't imagine how 2 not 1 2 LEO could not peacfully defuse this situation with out taseing him.....No criminal record legless and wheel chair bound and all they could think of was to tase him....this is the stories that scare the hell out of me. When is enough enough...this is exactly why we have a 2nd amendment in my mind.

They even said the crowd was hostile to the cops...well if they werent I would be concerned. I can tell you if I came up on 2 cops tasing a legless handicap man I would probably end up in jail too.

Yes this is BS. This is the problem as I see it. More and more departments are hiring p*ssies. So these p*ssies don't know how (or don't want to) to go hands on and use the least amount of force necessary....so they pull out the taser because of a little resistance. Quit hiring p*ssies or deal with your cops that become p*ssies!!!

Bwahahaha!!!!!

On a side note, I don't care for the taser and I never carry it. Hands on is usually better. When they first came out I tased a guy with a gun (yes I had lethal cover) but he had a thick jacket on and just stared at me. That was not a good feeling.

Once again, we have only one side of the story.....

Your right I suppose the officers are going to say he was charging them and they used non lethal force as directed in the handbook....please I dont care if the guy had a tire iron....he has no legs and is in a wheel chair....use your brain and defuse the situation....the answer is not always incapaciateing the purp I mean victim.

Again I thought big tough guys joined the force so they could get there hands dirty and do some good.

All you here about is the old lady got tased, the 14 year old girl got tased from behind at 20ft, the pregnant lady got tased......I mean come on pretty soon they'll just shoot you with a trank dart and have animal control come give you the citation....animal control is used to getting dirty.

Sorry I hate tasers they are missused and missrepresented to the public.

Ok, I'll sit in a wheelchair with a tire iron. And you stand 5 feet away. Now I've got one shot to throw the tire iron at you, I think I'll aim at your head.

Not so dangerous at your office job?

And you're right, all you do hear is about the negatives. I clearly said I don't care for the taser myself. But it can be a useful tool. And how many times have you been in the paper, or "breaking news" of a major metro news channel when the media gets it wrong. Probably never. Well I have. It sucks.

Is it possible the officers are wrong. Yes. But the difference between you and I is I need to know both sides of the story and remain open before I come to a conclusion. You on the other hand don't. That's why you could never be a police officer.

I certainly respect your opinions as well as MPS and agree that on many posts we only get one side of the argument, with that said I think many in the law enforcement community do not respect the constitutions they have sworn to uphold. I have been aquainted with many in law enforcement over the years and I have noticed a very distinct trend towards protection of radical officers rather than proper punishment and release. The county attorney here has at this time 5 unresolved LE killings since November of 08 and the jurisdictions are facing very high civil litagation. One such incident was 2 city police who parked their vehicles behind a corvette so it could not back out of the parking space and there was a bulkhead and fence in front of him so he could not pull forward, they began conversation with him and when he in his drunk condition argued with them they tased him causing him to hit the throttle and his corvette lunged forward into the bulkhead and fence and stop as it was stuck, the officers than fired 7 shots through the back of the vehicle and killed the driver who was drunk in a vehicle which could not go anywhere. The city even brought the officer back on duty except a 15 million dollar lawsuit has been filed and they were forced to put him back on paid leave. This is just one issue, I can document many others just in my county.
My problem is that although there are many LE's who actually understand the constitution and the bill of rights there are many who do not or would rather they were not sadled with those restrictions and since the local police are the last layer of protection of the citizen and the country without militia law it is of extreme importanc that those in LE realize the unconstitutional actions of those in their community and work to eliminate the bad eggs and cooperate with the citizenry in enforcing the constitution rather than letting the LE unions and the politicians whitewash these actions. We need to work together to stop this destruction of America. My rant Swampy:mad::(
